That's cool. Autobarn were selling the Autoglym Surface Detailing Clay Kit for $70. I checked up other retailers and found Repco stock it. Gave them a bell and it's $64 on the shelf.
AND they are having a whopping 30% off for RACQ members this weekend which takes it down to $44! So I've given the Prado a good wash out in the rain and let nature rinse her off. Given her a chamois in the garage and will head down in the morning to grab a kit.
Cheers. Never Clay Barred before. Looked at the video on their website and the kit comes with a bottle of Rapid detailer which is suitable to use as said lubricant.
You can use pretty much anything but don't use dishwashing detergent. Very dilute liquid soap is ok. Break off a piece of the bar about half a matchbox or less. Knead it in your hands until soft before using. Use one side only and when it looks dirty fold in half hiding the dirty bit inside. Again flatten and go for it. If you drop the piece of bar, throw it away and start again. It will stick and feel gritty until you remove the surface contaminants on the paint. Paint should feel smooth once you have finish using the bar. Make sure you wax afterwards because you will take everything off.
So in summary take everything off, wax afterwards and above all use lots of lube.
In the past when I've clay blocked, I just do it as I'm cleaning the vehicle. Starting from top to bottom, clean a section of the vehicle, leave plenty of suds/lube , and clay block away. You'll feel the paint work become nice and smooth as you go along. As mjrandom said, only use small pieces of clay at a time, kneading it along the way, and if you drop it, bin it, and grab another piece. You wouldn't want a piece of grit left in the clay as you continue cleaning your vehicle!
