  • Climate control mystery?

Hi all, lately my facelift gxl has been doing weird things regarding climate control. On startup, the climate control panel does not come on immediately. After about two minutes you can get it to display, but it always defaults to 25 degrees on all three zones. I did try disconnecting the start battery to reset any computerised issues. Seem to work for a few days as normal, then the problem comes back!
    Any ideas anyone? Thanks Chris.

Haha very helpful, just like the three Toyota dealers I HAVE been to. Thought someone else may have had this issue as well.

Perhaps if you had mentioned that you had been to Toyota and they couldn't help you would get some alternate ideas. The first thing I thought when I read you original post was knock on Mr Tojo's door.

It is a defect and you need to take it further with Toyota Australia and log the problem, they will likely tell you to take it back to the dealer but you might get more traction. Odd that it resets and then recurs.

          Hi

I'm having the same issue with my 2011 Prado VX, climate control panel does not come on immediately, then when it turns on al temps go to 25.

Have anyone find any solution for this?

          Thanks

Hi. I initially raised this post. No after many trips to Toyota and a week with out the car, nothing was ever found. They tried to blame the accessories that I’d fitted..

It has come good and has not played up since in the last year or so. Sometimes the reverse camera on the screen will not work either. Comes and goes. Sorry, I can’t help.

I have read on another forum with American model Toyotas where they have similar problems. Apparently one of the actuators has stopped working - either one that mixes the air, changes hot to cold, feet to face etc and so the system goes to initiation mode when the car starts as it picks up the problem on restart. Having the same issue on my 2014 Prado. Only light that comes on is AUTO and the system takes 30sec or so before I can adjust anything.

That's very interesting. The dealer wanted to charge me $700 for something they couldn't identify, but it has not done it for a couple of years now. I wonder if the actuators were sticky with outback dust.

                  Thanks for submittng.

Same happened to mine now, it seems to have auto-corrected, no issue at all. Lets hope it stays that way

Read through the descriptions on how the A/C Amplifier works and yes it has lots of smarts, so I wouldn't be surprised if it automatically tried cycling the system and resetting to defaults if it encounters a fault like a jammed air flap actuator as described earlier. For those with access to Techstream there is lots of info on what is happening within the A/C system and active tests you can use to isolate what function is not working properly.

The other thing that was a possibility is the 7.5A A/C fuse in the drivers side dash fuse box which is an A/C Amp memory keep alive power source connected direct to the main battery so if blown or the connection was intermittent due to a loose fuse could potentially reset the system settings to default the same as when you disconnect the battery for more than a minute.

Just noticed this thread, in a quest to track down some weird operation in my 2017GXL. My situation is different, but discussions about the "AC Amplifier" and the "Flap Actuator" have captured my interest. My post is linked :

Sorry if this is a silly question but what is "Techstream"? I would love to know about where the hot/cold blend actuator even is and how to check it, or how i can get a better understanding if it is the AC Amplifier that is acting strangely.

                        cheers,
                        Floyd
Had my 2017 P150 since new, but decently i noticed a change in the way that the "Auto" setting works on the climate control. I noticed because i kept noticing that my hands and arms were getting cold, when on the same settings that i have used daily for years. I seems like the air coming out the vents is a lot colder

Techstream is the name of Toyota's proprietary software tool that connects to the OBDII and allows reading and writing from/to the car's CAN bus. It requires a specific interface cable between the (Windows) computer and the OBDII port. Periodically, you see pirated or 'cracked' versions of the software in the interweb-thingy.
