  • Club 4x4 Insurance

Watching a bit of Pat Callinan I had recorded this morning, he mentioned "Club 4x4" insurance. Whats offered is pretty good, including coverage for a nominated $ value of accessories, $1500 for recovery anywhere in Aus, $2000 for possessions in your car and coverage anywhere, yep, anywhere in Australia.

I grabbed a quote for my Prado this morning, including $10k worth of accessories, and it was about $5/month cheaper than my current insurance with RACV. (this included a 12 month subscription to Pat Callinan's 4x4 magazine.)

Does anyone have any experience with Club 4x4? Should I look at swapping insurers?

I got a quote when I saw it in the magazine and mine was double my Yuoi one but they said they wanted to talk to me as I think it was just out of the box.

As my insurance is due at months end I will be chatting with them and post my findings

All insurances have some things that I am not happy with and it largely relates to them having the power to decide what is going to be done. For example I notice that this cover gives them the right to make you pay for any damage or wear and tear that they might deem was on your car before the event. I for example have a dent in the front fender of my car which I put up with. If however someone ran into me and damaged that panel of the car, this insurer could turn around and say they will fix the panel but I must contribute $800- which they deem would have been the cost to fix the prior damage.

It also states that they will not cover you if you are under the influence of ANY alchohol although it then goes on to say it won't covered you if you are over the limit. So they could determine that you were "under the influence" even if you are under 0.05; I guess only time will tell.

      And not that I would ever let anyone test drive my car for sale without me being in the car anyway but I note that they will not cover you if you did not go with your vehicle when it was being test driven by a potential buyer;

And again something I hope I would never make a mistake with but if I accidentally picked up the diesel pump instead of the unleaded, then I wouldn't be covered for any damage caused. This is not the case with my existing insurer.

Would I pay $5- per month more to have this cover? Probably but we will see when it next falls due.

Step number the next will be to run through the PDS' of RACV and Club4x4.
Part of me thinks the Club4x4 is too good to be true...and when something seems to be too good to be true, it probably is...

Can you let us know what you find Splisy?

I'm very interested in this because their quote cuts my insurance per month in half!

Ive had a quick look through the PDS' from both RACV and Club 4x4. I have summarized the notable differences below:
            • Club 4x4 underwritten by Hollards, RACV underwritten by Insurance Manufacturers of Australia
            • Club 4x4 covers accessories on the Prado - Bullbar etc. - above the agreed/market value of the car.
            • Hire cover for Club 4x4 is upto $180/day, RACV is upto $50/day. Both for 21 days.
            • Club 4x4 includes an off road recovery upto $1500, with an excess of $200. RACV does not offer off road recovery
            • Personal effects cover is $500 for RACV, Club 4x4 offer $2000, with an excess of $500
            • Club 4x4 specifically exclude damage caused by addition of incorrect fuel, RACV do not specify anything.
            • Basic Excess appears to be higher with Club 4x4 than RACV
            • I cannot find any Rating Protection details for Club 4x4. I have emailed them a query.

            The PDS' are available here:

It seems that Club 4x4 will cover more, but there are extra excesses that are to be paid...

the RACV insurance has exactly the same lines...seems to be a general statement

This was the response - very quick - from Club 4x4:

                Hi Ben,

                Thanks for your email.

At Club 4X4 we don’t calculate premiums using a rating – we don’t even ask for that information. We instead use the number of years that you have had a licence and your claims experience in the last 5 years. So to put it simply; no we do not offer a rating protection at this stage as we rate each individual policy using the fore mentioned information relating to licence and motor vehicle claims history.

                Kind regards,

                Jackson

                  Also, further research -
Young Driver and Unlisted driver excesses are $1000 each. (RACV's are $400 each)

                      From the PDS:
Once we have decided to accept the claim we may at our discretion:
                      • repair your vehicle. If we choose to repair your vehicle, we reserve the right to arrange for the repairs to be carried out at by a repairer of our choice if we deem that your repairer's quote is not competitive or we do not believe that they can satisfactorily repair your vehicle. We do not guarantee repairs that have been undertaken by a repairer whom we have not approved.
So I believe you can use your repairer provided the quote is competitive and the job will be thorough.

                        G'day all,

Hope you don't mind me getting involved here, but it is great to see that some of you have interacted with our quoting system (or staff!).

Really interesting reading all of your thoughts - happy to answer any questions you may have (if it's OK with the mods also).

                        Cheers all

                        Kal

That's great feedback on the wording around the DUI overage. Will take a look at that and make adjustments to the PDS in the future.

100% correct - Choice of Repairer was a very important addition, but obviously there will need to be a fairness test there to ensure we can keep premiums down in the future.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm sure I may have some more questions to throw your way.
