  • Sunday Mail: 12/2/16 "$62,000 Prado buyer to sue on Vibrations"

The following report is in Queensland's Sunday Mail today (14/2/16).
I have attempted to reproduce the article word for word....
edit... Obviously that should read "$62,000 Prado buyer"

    ************************************************** ************************************************** ***********
A Queensland motorist will sue car giant Toyota after it refused to fix or replace a new $62,000 four wheel drive he claims arrived with "terrific vibrations"

Toyota conducted an inspection and acknowledged the fault is "due to engineering of the vehicle and this requires the assistance of TMC Japan"
However, the company has told disgruntled buyer Peter Dewar of the Sunshine Coast, the vibration "does not constitute a major failure and the vehicle is fit for purpose"
Mr Dewar, a dispatch manager, has engaged high profile lawyer Peter Boyce in a bit to recoup his money.
He told The Courier Mail that he test-drove two cars and ordered a Prado GXL 2.8L turbo diesel automatic wagon through Ken Mills Toyota.
"The car I received turned out to be not suitable for driving. It vibrates through a certain rev range, about 1,800rpm, which is when you are at cruising speed. You hear a drone, feel it through the steering wheel and my wife can feel it in the passenger seat. Its terrible"
The 61 year old thought it might be something simple to repair and notified the dealer. He was told to bring the vehicle in to be checked and a staff member drove it., informing him he suspected the problem could be related to the gearbox. However, Mr Dewar said that almost three months had now passed with no action forthcoming from Toyota. A letter from the dealer informed him : "It is the firm opinion of Toyota that the vibration reported does not constitute a major failure." He was offered three free services for the "inconvenience". Mr Dewar was told reports on the vibration had been sent to Japan. A Toyota spokeswoman confirmed that the company was currently investigating the vibration.

Toyota's information on the new 2.8GD diesel engine

    http://www.toyota.com.au/news/high-torque-diesel-engine-to-power-toyota-prado

"High-Torque diesel engine to power Toyota Prado"

"Engineers also adopted comprehensive measures to deliver an engine that is notably quiet and smooth, particularly at idle. These include a chain rather than belt drive, the introduction of a counterbalance shaft, refined component design and strict vibration management.Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the new 2.8-litre engine will bring even higher levels of performance and driving pleasure to Prado.
“The new Prado engine is better in every way ‐ more power and torque, better fuel economy and reliability, and advanced smoothness and quiet operation,” Mr Cramb said "

“In addition, the impressively quiet and smooth engine results in a more comfortable atmosphere in the cabin.”....
Noise suppression is a highlight with significant work was undertaken to tune the sound of the engine, as well as reducing decibels...Engineers also applied vibration management techniques to the turbocharger and improved the rigidity of its mounts....The addition of an insulation cover to the oil pan as well as the new resin engine cover also contribute to noise reduction.

I have the same complaint about my 3.0 litre 150 auto. It is just not as smooth as the prado 120 auto I replaced with vibrations etc. felt when highway cruising and also idles less smoothly. All in all disappointing and I complained at the 1000km service to be told it is still new and notify them at the 6 months service if still happening.

Not great publicity for Toyota. Sounds like a problem specific to his vehicle. If Toyota can't fix it then they should provide a replacement car.

Obviously the dealers get no assistance from TMC Australia and then TMC Australia gets no assistance from TMC Japan in regard to issues like this. If people are waiting months for their cars from Japan, why doesn't Japan just replace them for these customers to avoid all the bad pres. We desperately need Lemon Laws here.

So let me get this straight, some dude wants to sue Toyota because of the dreaded drone in his new 150 Series D4D? And is the issue that this was supposed to have been cured in the new 2.8? This may sound ridiculous but is it possible they delivered an old 3.0 instead of the 2.8 to him? Apart from the 6 speed auto, how do you tell a new 2.8 from an old 3.0 D4D? Probably a stupid question but...

It's unfortunate and he shouldn't hold his breath waiting for a fix from Toyota ala "I bought a Jeep (lemon)". I was cruising the Kwinana Freeway and half way up the Mitchell freeway on Sunday in my 09 120 with my tired Bilsteins and 80,000km chewed up BFGs thinking this car is really smooth and quiet on the freeway.

It's obvious when you pop the bonnet: engine looks different, oil pickup in front, different plumbing for intercooler pipes etc.

But if you've never seen the old one (say like the punter in the story), how would he know its the new one?

yep - my 150 that has pretty much done half of its 45,000kms on unsealed roads is still the quietest and most comfortable car I have ever owned

I think it is good that if someone does actually have a lemon that they rip into Totoya, they have been brushing people off for years.

The 1500 rpm drone should have been fixed by the dealers on any car that had it, should have been no problem, just fix it.

Now we have the EGR problem, a patch up job to force the motor to comply and stuff the new buyers, it will last out past warranty and then we get to sell them a new motor.

Stick it to them sounds good to me.

There are two sides to every story. I've had an excellent run with warranty. It is easy to obsess over something, not saying that there isn't an issue but there are a lot of assumptions here and no facts.

Yes indeed, only some of the "facts" (as far as anyone can believe reporting) are in the first post...someone is unhappy with their new Toyota Prado, have attempted to resolve the issue and are now getting some legal assistance...the rest is indeed assumptions.

I would "assume" that many folk would not go down the legal pathway without some serious concerns and without other good advice, so I hope they can get it resolved. For someone to go down that path with a new vehicle that is openly advertised as being engineered to be quiet and smooth with less vibrations is worrying, and hopefully there is an easy solution and a satisfactory resolution. A vibration and drone issue is not an isolated issue, and there used to be a lot of posts on this forum about that sort of issue with previous models...thankfully our Prado didn't ever suffer the problem, but some people had a terrible time trying to isolate and eliminate the vibration/drone problem, some did so successfully...I don't remember all the solutions, but for some people putting a snorkel on fixed the issue, others put sound deadening under the guard somewhere and solved it (and for others the sound deadening didn't make a difference), some folk did something to the air filter box and it fixed the issue, others, from memory, had something vibrating near the corner of the windscreen...but to seemingly have a vibration/drone issue with the latest model is a shame. Hopefully we can follow the case and the outcome, and better still, hopefully any issue is an isolated one.
