  • Wind noise with your roof rack? How bad?

I've recently added a ARB 3/4 touring rack to my GX470 and the wind noise is very loud (almost unbearable on the highway) with the sunroof open and still somewhat noisy with the sunroof closed. Im considering removing the rack and only using it when needed.

How is the wind noise on your Prado with a roof rack? Curious as no one in the states has used this rack on my vehicle.

    Cheers!

I have a 1.8m (6') Tracklander. No noise up to 100kph (60mph). In any case usually can't hear anything above the screaming of the passengers. No sunroof though.

I have a locally made Tradesman full length steel rack, virtually silent.

          Noticeable but not problematic.

Alloy ARB not really noticeable on my 150. Why not try pick up an ARB wind deflector on the front to reduce the noise?

How many Prado 120's have sunroofs? I think that may be the problem, because when the sunroof is closed and the windows are down, its hardly noticeable. When the windows are up, its minor but noticeable. Im thinking if there was no sunroof you wouldn't hear any wind noise.

Definitely going to look into an ARB wind deflector, but honestly I hate how they look. Im pretty content at this point on just keeping the rack in the garage and throwing it on for trips.

Thank you for all of the responses, cheers!

The sunroof may actually provide better noise insulation as it is thick glass instead of thin sheet metal. The noise comes from the many round crossbars or the diamond mesh. Not sure which one you have.

If it is the round crossbars, the noise comes from the little air turbulence behind each crossbar as well as the uprights connecting the platform to the rails. You could try cutting off the rails and just have a flat platform and adding a triangle to the trailing edge of the round crossbars to make it more aerodynamic. You may only need to add it to the first few crossbars.

I have the same & agree that they are almost silent, also much better looking than any of the others, they are low profile & sit closer to the roof, I think that the oval tubing may contribute to the silence.

I have the Rhino rack on 3 HD bars. No wind noise at all but without the rack the noise over the bars is very loud. The rack obviously blocks the air movement from entering the open channels.

I have full Tracklander with a 120w solar panel up top towards the front and there isn't much noise unless there's a strong side wind.

Find a way to deflect noise off the front of the roof rack, fix a wind deflector or fix/gaffa tape something onto the leading edge to see if this reduces the noise.

I have this issue on my rola roof racks on my other car, a suzi grand vitara.....It was solved by leaving my rola fish rack holders on permanently, noise has gone.

Just installed the oze 4x4 aluminium trade rack and the sound is pretty bad. I'm going to have to remove it if I can't find a solution to reduce the noise.

Get a wind deflector on it

I have the Thule Aero bars.

They are normally silent, but I have put tape over the slots underneath the bars, near the legs. The tapes fell off the other day. Now I have significant whistle coming from the bars. I will replace the tape tomorrow.
