  • 150 Reversing Camera

    Afternoon guys

I can't see the towbar on my 2012 150 when reversing because the rear wheel sticks out further than the camera, therefore backing up to a trailer is virtually a two person job.

Is there a way around this? What have others done to rectify this issue?

    Cheers

i can JUST see mine when i grinded the bottom of the metal bracket holding the camera in place. If you put your car in reverse you will see the bottom of the bracket im talking about.

I put another camera on the outside of the wheel carrier and use a longer tongue for the caravan so that I can hitch it up myself

It's not the rear wheel, there is a small shroud under the camera that blocks the view of the bumper. If you pull the wheel cover off you can then undo the camera and remove the shroud. Should be able to see the towbar then. I can see parts of the bumper as well as the towbar. Still tricky to reverse though as the camera is offset.

        Cheers, Nova

I did the same as Nova. I had to remove the cover and wheel to get to the camera to remove the shroud. Very easy though it took about 10 mins and now I can see the tow bar and back bumper. I am not sure why the shroud is even on there.

first modification I did, 15min job. Removed the rear wheel cover. There are two small Phillips screws holding a little shroud around the camera lens. Removed the shroud, and I can now see the top edge of the tow ball.

i also removed the black plastic spare wheel backing "plate" and it will stay in the dyed with the spare wheel cover until I sell the car. The wheel cover can cause headaches when travelling. I didn't get a flat (BF Goodrich tyre were excellent), but If you are unfortunate enough to get a flat that "destroys" the tyre, the tyre can be deformed to the extent that the spare wheel cover just won't fit back on (I saw a couple of other folk with wires sticking out of their wrecked flat tyre). So then you have to do something with the wheel cover, and that's why you see some of these covers discarded beside outback roads. So basically, for me it was a simple case of take the spare wheel cover off, the backing plate off (it just collects rocks between the backing plate and the duck anyway), and shroud off from around the reverse camera lens.

                Secondary reversing camera - Caravan

Interesting thread - first time poster - so apologies in advance if I break any of the required etiquette. Just got a 2012 Prado 150 series, and hooking up a caravan to it. The caravan already has a reversing camera attached. Is there any way to connect a secondary camera to the standard 150 viewing screen or does it need an entirely new setup?

I've got a 2014 GXL with a Toyota towbar and I can't see the tow ball even with the shroud removed.

Same. Wheel cover itself blocks seeing towbar

my 2010 GXL and my 2016 GX were both very easily "modified" so I can easily see the tow ball.
1 remove the spare wheel cover....honestly, if you get a flat (as I did in western queensland) you wont be able to get the wheel cover back on anyway if the tyre is badly distorted, so I leave the wheel cover in the shed when towing or touring.
                      2. Remove the small black "shroud" that sits around the reverse camera lens. You have to remove a bolt, and then a couple of screws, but its easy, its simple, once you have a close look you'll see whats involved, and then your field of view across the bottom part of the lens is much increased. It was the first mod I did to my 2016 Prado, the day I picked up the car.

Has anyone re-positioned the camera? I'm inclined to drop the cover as well, but put a canvass cover on it instead. But that means moving it somewhere - why they moved it from the black handle plastic from the previous generation I don't know...

I use a soft cover but cut a hole in the centre and left the camera where it is. Removed the plastic shroud too.

I have the cover on around town in my 150 and have removed the shroud but still can't see the towball. It is the wheel cover itself that is the problem BUT if you put a zip tie through one of those $5 plastic towball covers and have it pointing backwards about 2 cm it can be seen in the camera.

After 18 months of not seeing the tow ball, yet reversing to trailers on a weekly basis, I quickly learnt a simple technique. Basically the tow ball is positioned where the "RR" part of "CHECK YOUR SURROUNDINGS" shown on the base of the screen, and as soon as the tow handle on the trailer disappears from view, you are ready to lower the trailer onto the tow ball.
