  • Trailer Stone Guard / Protector build.

    Hi All,

I have had our hard floor camp trailer for a just on 12 months now, and hands down its the 2nd best camping accessory purchased to date (Prado #1)

its a Chinese import trailer dated 2011. I bought it 2nd hand in April of 2015.
when purchased It already had a small bit of stone chips, mainly along the draw bar.

I bit the bullet and re-painted the draw bar a weekend or 2 ago, then noticed the chips on the tool box, followed by the main body of the trailer.
now as most of these chips are not rusty in anyway or very little compared to others I can only assume theses are caused by my use.

so I repainted the whole trailer. what a sucky job, no nice undercover area, wind blowing and as much paint on myself as the trailer.
used a Satin Black for the draw bar and a gloss black with flattener added for the body as after painting the draw bar they then mentioned that they could not get the satin again for a number of weeks. (used almost a full liter)

    Paint:
    Before:
    After:

so after deciding there is no way I'm going to do that every 12 months I looked into stone guards.
found a few varied styles from http://www.campertrailers.org/stone_guards.htm and decided on the simple style of Ron's Stone guard.

I liked that its easily removable by removing the ball, didn't look massive and could be easily fitted to other vehicles. doesn't impair access to the toolbox or reduce the turning circle. Its also simple to build and no where near the $500 price for retail products of similar design. There was little in the way of details on the build so I looked into it myself.

Measuered outside mudflap to outside madflap on the vodka cruiser and a length of 1900mm square hole section would be the go.

    Finished Pics

    Parts:
    1900mm 30mm x 30mm x 2.5mm SHS
    100mm x 200mm x 30mm ~2mm thick Angle
    ~4mm 900 x 600 Rubber (2x 600x450mm flaps)
3mm 30mm x 600mm Ally Strips (clamp the flaps in place)
    10x M6x50mm nuts and bolts
    20x M6 washers.

thanks to HERE I was able to get through some complicated math to get a max weight for the SHS. based on the length to center fixing a max weight of ~25kg at each tip of the SHS is possible without perminant deformation.
my 3kg worth of flaps and retainers will be heaps of room for the stress of bouncing on corrugations.

After having several stone shields over the years I made this one, flat from car to trailer. To date is the only one that stops all rocks hitting the trailer. When on fast gravel I put it below the A frame, off-road put it over the A frame so it doesn't get ripped if it scrapes the ground. Use elastic to allow for turning and spring clips or dog clips to attach to car. Have two bars mounted from the tow bar that it attaches to. It even keeps the mud off.

    And these help as well.

I have been running a Rock Tamers rear flap setup for several years now. My back bumper, rear door and spare are covered in thousands of chips. I also run some core-flyte on the rear window. I have a mesh guard on the front of the CT but all it does is send the rocks forward into the car and sometimes over the roof to fall onto the bonnet. I like the flat mesh that Rusty has. That big hole in the centre of the flaps on the Patrol will still allow many rocks to go through. I use a piece of rubber around the tow hitch to fill the gap between the flaps on my set up.

The flat stone shield is the best i have had. The angled shield in the pic pushed the rocks down but some still found the back door. I too used to run a plastic flexible sheet on the back window.
In the pic you can see fine dust on the top of the guard. This was after several hundred KM of fast dirt from Wolfe Creek to Alice on the Tanami Hwy. Not one rock on the back door.

        Total cost was under $50.

Just used black shade cloth. Now that this is working will look into using a more durable material. Then maybe cut a semi circle around the tow hitch. Was also thinking to use some sail track down each side of the A frame to neaten it up even more. Do the same inside the A frame to stop the rocks altogether.

                Hey Rusty & Bushbasher

thanks for the feed back on your experiences. its making me re-think things somewhat.

i will start off with the extended mud-flaps as intended but then I may make a "Hanging cloth" upgrade to it later on.
I figure that as the 2 techniques require the same principle bar across the rear of the vehicle it shouldn't be hard to modify / upgrade.

I use a Stone Stomper and some custom flaps after smashing alight on the rear while travelling north on the Oodnadatta.

Nice work on the flat stone guard Rusty.
I was looking at making one for mine but as I have the fridge in the back of the car I thought access would be a pain.
How do you find getting into the back of your car with it on. Is it a pain unclipping and clipping it back on each time you need to get in the back?

                    Cheers,

Whatever people do, do not attach longer flaps to your stock mud flaps. I did this a few years ago and it not only ruined the mudflaps but it stuffed all of the plastic fitting points on the fender flares. I also tore them off a couple of times too. There is no strength in the standard mudflap fitting.

Also a point with the horizontal mesh: I have a fridge slide on both sides at the back. The bigger fridge on the left slides out and could easily be accessed without having to remove the horizontal screen. I like that idea.

I have clips on the car end, as well as the trailer. Will be changing these out to dog lead or climbers type. We also have a fridge on slide on RHS and access when clip undone is good. Even can just push your leg against the elastic for quick fridge access when needed.

                            Hi all
I can also vouch for the effectiveness of the horizontal protection slung from vehicle to trailer.
We fitted a Stone Stomper to our camper after its rebirth and galvanizing bath.
This meant that we could do away with the Vee shaped, vertical screen that the Challenge had fitted to it originally.
Therefore eliminating the pole that sat just behind the hitch.
Now we can swing the rear door of the Prado to access cargo or fridge.
                            Info here:http://stonestomper.com.au/
