  • Fuel gauge reading empty with 20L left

I have a diesel 150 and if I drive till my fuel gauge is empty with warning light on and digital range till empty down to zero, when I refill I find I can only get 130L in the tanks.
After I refill my range is just over 1000km but average fuel use is on the computer is about 11.4l/100km which should give me 1300km. I have now repeated this as an experiment a few times to check if it's an anomaly but seems consistant.

Does anyone else find something similar? It really bugs me for some reason. I would expect I few litres but 20 seems a bit of a high safety margin.
    Any way to fix this?
    Thanks

Try filling up again the next day, there are issues with frothing diesel blocking the breather lines. Often you can fit another 10-15L in after driving a few kms.

Not ideal but might indicate if the tank is really full. My bet is it isn't.

With mine I tend to fill it slowly, and find son servo have better pumps than others.

One trick I found is not to shove the nozzle all the way in, it hangs half in safely and you can here the breather tube working better, it just get block by the nozzle on some stations.

I did the same thing when I bought it new so back I go to the Dealer, he said that it was meant to be that way. When it shows empty you still have 22 litres in the tank (as per manual for diesel).

As you have found, you can only put in about 125L back to full.

I think the projected range is calculated by recent usage, perhaps the last 100k or so. When on a trip mine comes up at about 1520k projected range when full but around town it will come up about 1200k when full.

If you fill before a trip then get out on the open road the range may read, say 1250k, but when you get rolling down the highway you will find that the Odometer may show you have travelled 1k but the range has not changed, when the fuel usage drops it will only take one K off the projected range every second K travelled until it hits the new calculated range for the remaining fuel

when i fill my 120 it clicks out when full , i then can add 15 to get it to fill to the top of the neck
my light doesn't come on till i have 60km left on the display and the gauge is showing almost empty

the most i have done is run it down to 6km to empty then have add 185.3L to the top of the neck

my outback gets to 120 km left the light come on when it gets down to 40km it then goes off and flashes at you !!

Not sure that is quite correct. When the light comes on, you have approximately 22L in the tank.

Of course, but in reality I doubt that I could use it all anyway, so lets say I have 20L and I should be looking for a fuel stop anywhere in the next 150k or so

Sounds like one of those things that creep into the habits after we buy a Prado, Wow under half a tank, even though I have more fuel than most cars on the road I better fill up

I tested my own theory today, 9km left on range, put the filler in only half and got 142.6L in in one go. Range not 1250km.

I managed to put 150 litres in my 150 after removing the tanks and draining both of them . Under normal running it's around 130 litres . The fuel consumption displayed reads 10 % less than reality .
                    Cheers Ross

I found on the 90 series sub tank runs out when the needle is well under the E mark.
Only tested it on the open hwy so as it lost power I could switch to the main tank.

                          My experience
130.8L until fuel bowser clicks off showing 60kms left on range. My reckoning is there's about 20L left when the range says 0. Range goes back to 1400 kms when refueled. I average about 9.7L/100 based on consumption not trip computer.

I find that the range is about 15-20% too pessimistic when country driving.

In the KD the manual says 22 litres left when empty light comes on but does anyone know how much of that we can actually use ?

I have never seen my fuel light come on as I don't like to be that empty, although one trip it got down to 25klm left but no light came on.

I would not like to be 100klm away from fuel and the light comes on

All of it of course. You can safely drive 100km past the range reading --

I do this every tank, I at least wait till the range goes blank at 1350km and then go around 50km past before filling and can fit 143L in. But only if I fill at BP. For some reason other service station fuels froth and I can only get 120L in and have to drive 1km to the next, to fit in the remaining 25L.
