  • Roadsafe Extended Upper Ball Joints

    Hi All
This time last year when replacing the control arm bushings across the front of our 03 V6 GXL , I also took the opportunity to replace the ball joints while the arms were removed from the vehicle.
Roadsafe ball joints were sourced from Bursons and the recommended parts pressed into the control arms. Toyota only supply upper control arms with ball joint fitted as a replacement unit.
So over the weekend I planned to rotate the wheels to keep the BFG KM2's in good shape, a task that's done every 5k km cycle.
With the vehicle supported by chassis stands and the wheels at full droop but clear of the floor, I check for any movement by grabbing the wheel to give it a good shake/thrust/ "Half Ox".
I find that the right has movement when rocked top to bottom, eg. 12:00-6:00.
The slack, I discover to be in the upper ball joint.
Since installing these Road safe ball joints they have released ball joints to suit raised/lifted vehicles.
They have manufacturered these extended by 25mm and claim the advantages of clearance of the coil spring and the control arm during full droop. Better caster adjustment. Better ball joint angle and movement.
The Roadsafe ball joints have a 2 year/40000 km warranty.
Yesterday I spoke to Bursons about a claim for replacement.
Sounds like it should be ok, however they require the removed/faulty unit for return to Roadsafe.
Will look at getting the extended version to replace both sides, part no.BJ4084 to reduce the chance of future problems with the planned suspension upgrade.
Has anyone had any expiriences with the extened uper ball joints?
Endeavor to post a link or pictures when in front of my pc.
    Cheers
    Troy

How are the extended ball joints holding up?

      Hey all,

Please note that the Roadsafe ball joints referred to above did not droop below the OEM ball joint due to a low included angle.

Roadsafe are aware of this issue and have designed a new high angle ball joint that will finally droop below the OEM binding length of 575mm.

It should be coming into the market very soon.

Good feedback Mark. Is that limitation for both the std and extended version currently?

          Hey,

That is correct, there is no Roadsafe ball joint that exists for a Prado/FJ arm that droops below the OEM ball joint.

Last I heard around 6 weeks ago was that the new ball joints were in production and would be "around a month away". I haven't heard an update yet, so I'm guessing they're still a while off.

After testing a Moog with included angle of around 75deg in a Blackhawk arm, I can tell you that it drooped to 580mm open with no coil contact/binding issues. Have a mate wih an FJ running around with this setup with no issues.

The new Roadsafe ball joint will hopefully droop to 580mm!

Hopefully they will have a different part number. I see people are still selling the old extended ball joint on ebay so we need to be able to tell the difference

                  Hope they do a recall.
Ended up fitting the extended roadsafe ball joints to the upper cotrol arms.
They work alright as a ball joint I guess, but they kind of sit at some unusual angles at times.
As Mark has pointed out above the articulation of these ball joints is limited and even less than the OEM unit.
Roadsafe wil be on the right track if the can successfully combine the extended ball joint with a high droop angle ball joint.
                  Cheers Troy
