  • Long life synthetic composite elastomer bushes

    Hey all,

    I came across these while looking for a replacement for my mates flogged out strut bushes.

    For those of you who’ve had issues with IFS bottom strut bushes getting flogged out and not lasting long (quite a common problem on the IFS), there’s an interesting new material type available which will last much longer than OEM rubber bushes. The photo below shows the new type of bushes;

    These are made from a synthetic elastomer (a synthetic form of rubber) which is made as a composite with silicates (rather than typical carbon black mixed with natural rubber). They are made here in Australia.

    These bushes have been tested out to 200,000 cycles at 17kN. After 200,000 cycles they were still like new! In comparison, OEM rubber bushes failed by 60,000 cycles. The synthetic elastomer bushes will also out-flex natural rubber, something like 33% to 19% elasticity. The bush material is also recessed from the edge to allow for elastic expansion without flowing past the edge of the crush tube.

    These new synthetic bushes have been tested by a Pradopoint member who was having front strut bushes fail at low km’s on his 120, and who had tried both rubber and urethane without success. He has now driven over 10,000km on them trouble free, and he’s running a Bilstein/King combo on the front.

    I’ve also been told there’s an armoured 200 series running around Canberra that has re-valved Bilsteins that also use these bushes.

    I’ll be trialling these in my mates 120 with Koni RAID 88-1712 struts, as his Koni urethane bushes have flowed a lot already with minimal km’s on them.

    If you have problems with your strut bushes, give Fulcrum R&D in Brisbane a call and they can set you up with a synthetic elastomer pair!

    Looks good. Any idea of cost compared to standard?

    Could have used some of those on my old struts. Wonder how the Dobinsons bushes will last.

      Hey,

      I'm not sure about cost at the moment, I scored a couple of freebies to test out, best to call Fulcrum!

      Yep the old bushes in your Bilstein struts were well and truly kaput! All the dynamic forces in the IFS end up going through the strut bush, many thousands of Newtons of force pounding through there!

          Hey all,

          Here's a before and after shot of my mates flogged out Koni bushes replaced with the synthetic elastomers;

          Keep in mind that if you have Konis, the inner ring eye diameter is a pesky 0.5mm smaller than every other standard ring eye, so you'll need to machine the synthetic elastomers down a little to press them into a Koni.

          It is only Koni that do this, every other strut is 0.5mm bigger and the synthetic bushes will press straight in.

          These synthetic bushes are now on two different Pradopoint members Bilsteins, so hopefully they get some decent km's done on them!

          I'd also like to point out that strut bushes failing early is becoming more common, below is a photo of a new 2.8 diesel Hilux bush with a tiny 500km on it and the bush has already torn.

          Big thanks to Warwick at Fulcrum who did some quick on the spot machining at Fulcrum today to help sort out my mates Konis!

            Hey all,

            Here's a photo of Photoprados worn out bushes in his Bilsteins;

            This is quite common to see with Bilstein bushes.

              Hi Mark, are these available in sizes suitable to replace the lower wishbone bushes?

                Hey Dai,

                I don't believe they are presently, but I'm not sure if they will be in the future!

                I'll get back to you about it!

                  G'day Mark,
                  I've got some TJM shocks in my 120 which are in need of some more bushes. Sadly TJM in Adelaide have been completely useless in helping me. What would be involved with getting some bushes to fit these? Do you have any contact details for Fulcrum please?
                  Thanks Nick

                    Hey Nick,

                    Hopefully they have some more, they're still very new!

                    Give Warwick or Scott a call at Fulcrum R&D on (07) 3892 9000.

                      Hey Dai,

                      I checked with Fulcrum today, and there are no plans to make synthetic elastomer bushes for the lower arms.

                      They do sell Superpro urethane bushes for the lower arms.

                            Is this a common issue for those running billies MarK?

                            You don't mention OME at all - is this less of an issue with the ARB struts and why?
                            Cheers

                              The bushes on my new Bilsteins lasted less than 25000 ks when I had the suspension upgrade. I provided Bilstein with feedback and got replacement costs reimbursed.
