  • 275/70/17 tyres vs fuel consumption

    Hi all

I realise that lots of threads have covered running larger tyre sizes on 150's. But I have not seen a deffinative response to upsizing rubber to 275/70/17 tyres and how much it increase you're fuel use & power?

Any feed back from drivers that have unsized to 275/70/17 would be hugely appreciated.

    Regards

    Greg

    1. If anything it will probably correct the small discrepancy in your speedo. So... if you are showing 100km/h, you would normally expect to be doing about 94km/h, so the chances are you would be doing the 100km/h in the larger size, so need to look out for 'slightly' exceeding the speed limit.
    2. Expect approximately 5% worse fuel economy.

Increasing tyre size over standard will impact your fuel economy and power... The bigger you go the bigger the impact.... Going from HT to AT to MT will in turn further compound this...

I Swapped the standard tyres for the new BFG all terrains 265/65R17 and was running 8.7lts per 100kms with the stock, now running at 9.2 per 100kms

Do you get rubbing with 2" lift and the 275/70/17's?

Don't forget the bigger u go, that u have actually travelled further than what your odometer indicates. If you factor that into your fuel calc's then it might not be as bad as u think..... I reckon that the "type" of tyre has a bigger effect. We went from a Bridgestone 697 to a Couragia M/T's and this made a big difference in fuel economy figures....
I've always factored in the difference in the tyres circumference's and my speedo indicates 149664kms travelled but when u factor in the tyre size difference, I've actually travelled 153294kms

If I was to work out economy purely based on Speedo reading and fuel used, my economy would be: 12.8ltrs/100kms
If I was to work out economy factoring in the Tyre size difference and fuel used, my economy would be: 12.5ltrs/100kms

Not a big difference as my tyre sizes that I've used in the past has been 1 set of factory 265/65/17 size tyres (H/T pattern); 1 set of 275/65/17 tyre sizes (A/T Pattern @ 2% bigger); and 1 set of 265/70/17 (M/T pattern @ 4.5% bigger), but there is a difference though.

i went to 275s and noticed quite a dramatic drop in performance and increase in fuel. i had the gx 245s beforehand on an AT pattern. The 275s are Cooper ATs.

I have a 120 series prado but i'm sure its very similar to what occurs on a 150.

i noticed from my standard 265x65x17" road tyres going up to 265x70x17 AT's I lost around 2ltr/100k's
                then from those 265x70x17 AT's up to 285x70x17 MT's i lost another 2ltr/100k's

NOTE: this does not account for the extra distance travelled so actual loss to economy is less

                    Hi all

As an update for all who may be interested I upgraded to BF Goodrich ATs KO2 and they are great. Just did a 5k run up the Oodnadatta track towing my CT and they performed great. They have increased the fuel by .5 lt per 100k but corrected the speedo from 94k to 100 so am getting 5ks or so extra per 100. Don't have to run an offset with these and they fit under the spare wheel cover if you deflate them. I've gone with a spacer and exposed for easier access anyway. I can notice a slight drop in performance but it's not significant for the increase in size off-road.

Thanks for all of your replies to this thread.

                      Hi Spills,
What size did you end up fitting?
Did they go on stock rims?
Do you have a suspension lift?
                      Any rubbing?

                      Thanks,
                      Chris

265/70R17 and 285/70R17 is very common with a good range.
275/70R17 isn't a very common size and there are very few brands that carry this size. So purchase price will be reflected.

Good compromise between slightly more fuel use and small gain in height without having to change rims and worry about rubbing on UCAs and body mounts is the 265/70R17.

I went with a set of 265/70/17's in BFG Ko2's and am very happy with them. I have noticed a small drop in performance, but the car handles much better off road with both traction and clearance.

Assuming a lot here - but did you get them on tyresales? There's two 265/70/R17 KO2's - which is what I am going to get. However, the lower rated one (112S) is around $100 more than a higher rated one (121/118S) and I can't figure out why?
