  • Terrible Fuel Consumption - 5VZ-FE!

    Hi All

I need some help... Have bought an auto 98 Prado with the 3.4 5vzfe petrol engine but the fuel consumption is off the charts!

I filled the main and sub tanks up. Added an extra 15L at one stage too and still only got about 850Kms out of them together. Other people are reporting 1000 - 1200Ks on the tanks.

I have just run a can of fuel system cleaner through the tank so hopefully that will help a little. I also took the MAF off and had a look and it looks pretty clean. Its one where you can't remove the actual element part... the sensor and housing tube are all one piece. But looking into it in the sun I could see the element was silver and not caked in black soot. I didn't clean it because sensor cleaner is pretty expensive here and it didn't seem worth it (any thoughts?)

What else can I do to try and get it working a bit more efficiently?

    It drives absolutely fine.

    Thanks

hi, there not the best, had mine for 20 yrs, hasn't changed, try not pushing the foot down so hard, is it auto or manual? clean the maf sensor with the correct spray and do it regularly , it helps, whats more expensive the fuel or the cleaner?

How many Kms do you get out of the two tanks?

I am very light on the foot with it. Try not to let it go over 2K revs.

      Its an Auto.

Yeah I will try cleaning the MAF but are there any other things I can do mechanically to help with it?

Changing the cast headers for extractors and the whole exhaust helped, im heavy on the foot and get around 900ks from 120lts I aim at around 3k going thru the gears, ive never driven an auto , Iput a K & N air filter in as well , how many ks has it done, but don't expect to much, when both tanks show empty there is 20 lts in both tanks still.

What is the fuel consumption in L/100km?

When I first got mine I was only getting about 800 out of both tanks around town driving. Pumped up the tyres from 32-34psi (what is says in door well) to about 40psi gave me a 25% increase. Still I can only really get 15l/100km at best with half city half highway driving.

              15l/100km
thats as good as a 5vzfe will do i think, I get around 16l/100
I got myself some Big Horn Maxxis and was telling my landrover lover mate he said what size did you get I told him 265/75/16 he said I didn't know they came that small.

When I lived in Brisbane I was getting about 1,100km from both tanks filled to the brim every month for years with combined city/hwy cycle.
Where I live now I have to drive up the Toowoomba range 5 mornings a week to go to work. It's steep and long, and kills fuel economy. I get 850km from both tanks in a fortnight. I used to go up in 2nd at 5,000 rpm but slow it down now to 60 km/h in 2nd and keep the speed steady which helps a little bit. At traffic lights I don't take off in a rush and just accelerate slowly. I don't know the topography of Perth, but do you have to drive up long steep hills every day? If you do that's your cause.

If not then you're car has problems that need addressing. It could be a combination of things:
Air filter, fuel filter, MAF sensor, fouled spark plugs, oversized tyres at lower pressures, extra weight in or on the car, driving style, E10 fuel, too thick viscosity of engine oil? Could be any combination of things.

Talking about how many kilometres you get from a tank/s is pointless, as who is to say you are always filling from the same empty level. How many kilometres did you do and how many litres did you put in afterwards? This is the only way to figure out the consumption. Also, as someone else asked, are you driving into the city, are you driving in the urban area or is in all country.

As to our Prado, driving to and from work but not into the city was about 14.5 l/100 km. Country is about 11.5 l/100 km without rooftop tent and full load. Towing a heavy boat around town is about 20 l/100 km.

The only times I have ever got 1000 km from tanks has been country driving at a reasonable speed. You will never get 1000 km around town.

Another thing to check are the rubber hoses in and out of the inlet manifold, airbox etc.

I found some looked good but had perished and had split where they went into the various fittings and were letting vacuum escape / air in.

I bought 2m of vacuum hose from Autobarn and cut to length. I didn't bother with the genuine shaped hoses as it probably would cost a significant amount.

Fixing these seemed to improve fuel economy.

                    Cheers,
                    Mal

+1 for this. With the lift, tyres, bullbar and roof rack I'm averaging around 16-17L/100km. Keep the MAF clean though, it'll help out a heap. The 5VZFE is a pretty reliable engine, it's just bloody thirsty!!!

No, it is not a thirsty engine. It depends on how you drive it. See my figures above for the consumption over the 17 years since I purchased my 90 series.

                            Cheers for all the posts.

I am very gentle on acceleration as mentioned try not to go over 2k revs even when leaving traffic lights and think my driving style is pretty economical, don't think it would be attributed to that. Rarely have to go over hills.

I have only had it long enough to put one full round of fuel in both tanks and tried to let it run to as close to the empty marker as I could and I got just over 800kms from it. And that was with one country trip up to the pinnacles and back which is about 400 of the 800kms

Have now cleaned the MAF as well.

Do these have o2 sensors and how many of them?

how many litres per hundred kilometers are you using rather than kays per tank?
