  • Installing dual battery in brand new 150 series

    Hi all.

We have just bought a brand new 150 Prado and need to put a dual battery in it for the fridge.

How has Toyota wired up the vehicle?

Is it that the two batteries are directly connected to form one large crank battery?

    or

Do I need to put an isolator in for the second battery?

    or

Do I need to put in a DC Charger (I have a Redarc BCDC 1240)?

I've just been through the process, and the forum just made me more confused! So I just took it to ARB HQ in Kilsyth, who fitted a Redarc BD-DC 1220-IGN, Optima Yellow Top, ARB Battery tray and 2x 60A fuses from the existing and new batteries to the Redarc. Probably the 'gold plated' solution, but I plan to keep the car for 10 years.

I'm in the process of taking the VSR route with Trixide.

I simplified the decision down to
-if your aux battery is under the bonnet, get a VSR
        -if it's further away, get a DC-DC

Though with the right cable you can charge your rear battery with a VSR and others use a DC-DC under the bonnet, though this will take longer

Understandably so!!! Did you get them to wire in anything or will you do that yourself?

          Will.

Has anyone come up with a system that uses the alternator to charge till current drops below a certain threshold then swap over to dc-dc for remainder till full?

I've wired up from the battery myself. 8B&S twin through firewall (splits off to a USB charge socket) down the sills to an Anderson plug at the back. This connects to my Drifta drawers, where i used a small recess at the back to split everything off to various sockets.

Hi Bob and sorry mate, 8B&S ( 7.9mm2 ) is way to thin.

To have any dual battery system work at it’s optimum, INCLUDING DC/DC setups, you need at least 6B&S ( 13.5mm2 ).

Presuming that the 8B&S supplies a charging device and is not just a power outlet which is how I read it. Bob can you clarify please?

i was replying to Will. If you read my original post, ARB wired up the dual batteries and Redarc, and it looks like 6B&S , possibly 3. I'm just running 8B&S to the back for the fridge and LED camp lights etc.

And in a cool trick, if you plug the Waeco into the 220V socket at the same time, it uses that when it can, allowing the aux battery to charge a little faster.

You have fused the negative Bob?

Only one system I'm aware of the is off-the-shelf but apparently very expensive...

                        Hello Bob,
I have just bought a new 150 diesel GX and are in the process of adding a dual battery etc. and wiring for the back
The battery wiring under the bonnet is no problem, but I am wondering how easy/hard it is to get the power cable down into the back.
Do you have to lift up the sills and remove covers to feed it done or do you feed it under the chassis?
Also, do you run a dual black/red down to the back or just a red and earth a terminal box or circuit breaker?

                        thanks for any advise,
                        Terry

Pretty easy to run it in the sills - they just lift up with some force, although I have broken 2 clips so far (bought 20 replacements off Ebay). I ran +ve and -ve, as everything I've read says this is more reliable than getting a good earth off the car. Spilsy just posted some photos on his build thread off the sills.

Getting the cables through the grommet and the firewall were the hardest part.
Once through, routing along the door sills was pretty easy.

Prize off the foot plates with a large flat screwdriver
Pull the vertical parts of the rubber trim from the lower part of the B pillar to remove lower inside panel
Remove vertical parts of the rubber trim from the lower part of the C pillar and inside handle to allow you to prize open the panel and push wire over rear wheel arch.

I needed to modify the underside of the footplates to allow them to fit over the wire.

Ha! I know how you feel Bob ... it would be nice to have a 'sticky' which set out (concisely) some of the different options that users have installed. I had a traumatic experience with my auto electrician, but ended up with a simple set-up that works fine (Redarc SBi isolator through to an under-bonnet battery; Anderson off the SBi through to a CTEK DCDC charger + third battery in the camper trailer).
