  • Diff Drop Kit Required?

    Quick one

    I'm looking at a range of different suspension options at the minute and have recently been quoted on an ironman setup. They have mentioned I'll need the diff drop kit for the front also. No one else has suggested this, i.e. Bilstein, Lovells etc.

    Is this a must for a 50mm lift or is it for some reason limited to the ironman setup? I noted that their setup was the only one that required 10mm spacers at the front also, could this be a reason for the diff drop kit?

    Should probably have a read of this thread before letting anyone install strut spacers.. If that's their plan.

      Are the other kits a genuine 50mm or are they 40mm ?

        I'm looking at Bilstein and a few other options, I guess they're all advertised as 40mm generally, so maybe the Ironman is actually 50mm which is why the diff drop kit is required.

          The requirement for a diff drop isn't really about the amount of lift but how long the strut will open. The purpose of a diff drop is to prevent CV binding and to reduce CV angles under normal ride height conditions. Under lifted conditions, a diff drop will get the CVs to operate at a straighter angle. How much this will increase the life of the CV is hard to quantify.

              Hey,

              There's not much in it, at full droop on 570mm struts, you'll only see around 1deg of difference with a 25mm diff drop (1:2 so only 12mm or so on the diff).

              The real benefit of a diff drop is leveling out your CV's at ride height, and this can be of benefit at any lift. Obviously the more you lift the thicker the diff drop spacer will need to be to level the CV.

              The anecdote that you don't need a diff drop until a 2" lift is exactly that, an anecdote.

              Leveling out your CV's will put less strain on the CV tripod, less wear and tear, longer cycle life.

              I only run a 40mm lift, but I run amts 25mm diff drop spacer, and even with the front diff lowered 12mm or so, we still have more ground clearance than a Patrol pumpkin.

              Only hassle with running a diff drop is you'll need to space your bashplate down a bit.
