  • Front control arms

On my 90 series I had to move the steering rack to get the lower control arms out - the bolt/axle wouldn't slide out otherwise. Does anyone know if this is the same on the 150, or is it just a case of undoing the control arm axle/bolts and they come away?

    Hey,

Just undo the two hub bolts, take out the strut bolt, then undo the cam bolts and nuts on the lower arms, and they'll drop straight out.

Front Control Arms - follow up question

How much play is acceptable in the front lower control arm bushes. The lower front bushes have zero play, while both sides at the rear can be moved a couple of mm with a 2ft pry bar. A local tyre and suspension place said zero movement, but reading up on it some sites (not Prado) suggest that some play is required which is why they are rubber. So should I be able to move them with a 2ft pry bar? Or do they need to be replaced? The car has done 130k with zero offroad (I have another car for that).

The car does judder excessively when braking from motorway speeds or braking hard at moderate speeds, but has zero brake pedal or steering wheel feedback when braking at low speeds, hence me looking at the control arm bushes. I know it could also be brakes, but I've had that before on other cars and this feels different.

          Hey,

The rubber bushes in the lower arms have an incredible amount of flex in them. If you get the opportunity, put your Prado up on a shaker hoist and you'll be blown away by how much those lower arms can move!

All normal, nothing to worry about.

The judder you describe could be rippled rotors, have an inspection and feel of the rotor surface. Very common to have a shuddery juddery feel from rippled/buggered brake rotors in Prados.

Thanks, I'll go take a closer look at the brakes.

Sounds rotors to me. I've seen similar symptoms a lot.

Thanks. I've gone ahead and ordered new discs and pads. Even if it turns out to be something else, I'll still use these and then I have a swap pair of rotors for machining.

Try some Dba T2 rotors. Make a big difference in stopping. Bendix 4x4 pads are the go.
I wouldn't put standard stuff back on.

Yeah your bushes will likely be fine.
Brake shudder, disc thickness variation. Can be measured with a dial indicator.
In prados it's often the rear, you will feel a pulsation in the "seat of your pants".
If you get shudder in the steering, that's the fronts.
