  • Petrol vs Diesel

I have been thinking of changing my 2010 Prado for a newer petrol model. I put forward this comparison of the amount of threads for each fuel type:

The majority of threads in the diesel section are:
    Holed pistons
    Injector issues
    EGR related issues
    Fuel filtration
    Dirty/water contamination

    The petrol section:
How many different ways can I enjoy my stress free motoring experience.
(OK I am being a bit of a smart ass, but there seems to be some merit in those stats)

A few reasons why I want to change over:
    My diesel has 155,000klm
I'm tired of the manual gearbox in my car
It's not great for daily driving, low power. (Torque is awesome though)
I already had to change the injectors (still dirty on that after 37,000klm)
    Constant fuel filter changes
It's still a dirty old rattly diesel engine, sure it's smoother than older models, but it's not where I believe they should be with this technology.
I'm carrying a bullbar and winch around that I have never had to utilize (100kg) and I'd rather not have them installed

There's also the other wear and tear issues of a car that's at the klm of mine.

So what are peoples constructive thoughts on this? Are petrol owners happy? Do diesel owners wish they purchased a petrol? I'm not too concerned about fuel useage, I'll have my Corolla on the road halfway through this year for daily duties.

    Cheers Brad

    G'day Brad,

I have owned a 2013 V6 GXL pre facelift since new. No regrets at all with going for the petrol over the diesel option. Great car to drive, heaps of power on tap when required. Now its out of warranty I'm doing my own servicing which is pretty straight forward even with the cartridge style oil filter.

Agreed its not all just about fuel usage, but to give you an idea I travelled back to Sydney yesterday from Lakes Entrance in Vic, easy trip in the Prado, 725 kms and filled up this morning with 78 litres, I'm happy with that, car was pretty well loaded up with gear and 2 people.

    Regards...Mick

For what you seem to need Brad, you make a very good argument for going petrol. I'm sticking with Diesel at this point as I like the torque and at some point I plan on doing the Canning stock route and would need to squeeze the maximum distance out of each tank so Diesel wins. Chatting to my mechanic, he is not seeing all those diesel problems and stands by his view that appropriate maintenance should avoid / find problems before they are an issue, will just have to see if he is right!

I've only had my petrol GXL for about 6 months but I'm not regretting the decision at all. I've driven a diesel for work and the petrol is so much nicer as a daily driver. Fuel usage is higher but not too bad for a big car, ~13L/100Kms for highway driving, 16ish in the city (with bar, dual batteries, rack, etc). Services are cheaper for the petrol, and the initial buying price is less, but diesel running costs will probably still be less if you keep the car for a while. I'm happy to pay for the extra power and reliability though.

Only reason I'd buy a diesel over the petrol is if I was towing often, or if I regularly needed the longer range. I get about 1000kms from a tank on the highway, but I know there's some trips I'll need jerry cans for that a diesel could do without e.g. the simpson.
