  • 5 tyre rotation

My front left tyre is getting pretty low in rubber (factory originals). I'm booked in for a 40k km service this week. Yesterday I took off the spare tyre cover to inspect how many more kms I might get out of the set. It turns out that the spare tyre has not been used yet!

I was just assuming they did a 5 tyre rotation at 20k service. Apparently not. I know they did it cause they mentioned it in the list of things done.

I will ask for a 5 tyre rotation this week, but I'm not sure the dealer will do it. I was wondering if there are any laws in NSW that say you can't use the spare wheel unless it's an emergency, like if you blow one. I have a feeling I heard this somewhere. True?

I rather annoyed that I have 1 new tyre while other 4 will require replacing in the next 12 months. I should have checked that at the service, but since my handbook demonstrates the 5 tyre rotation I thought that was standard.

You need to ask for all wheel rotation before service .
The law you talking about is for space savers only.
I always take spare wheel cover and lock nut off before service so they don't get damaged again.

Yep - even though manual supplied with vehicle shows 5 tyres under the Rotation section, the lazy apprentices only do the 4 tyres on the car UNLESS YOU ASK FOR 5!!?? Even pointing out the service manual to them just gets a shrug of the shoulders and some rubbish about space saver spare tyres. And that is not just Prados - same on wife's Corolla. Last service at Toyota on Corolla - a 2015 sedan - when I asked for 5 tyre rotation the 'service reception' guy had to open boot and check the spare was a proper wheel/tyre! Sheesh, don't they know their own cars?
I put number with permanent marker on all tryes near valve to be sure done properly! GERRY

My manual says they are to be rotated every 5000km. I have been doing it myself as not once have they been done in any service to date. My 150 is coming up for its 20,000km service in June so I will see if it is done then. (I discretely numbered the rims before each service so that I can tell if the wheels have been rotated.)

Well I took off the back tyre protector and lock before I took the car in for its srvice today. I think they're supposed to rotate tyres at least every major service (20k, 40k, etc) - check the service manual. I asked anyway for the 5 tyre rotation, which they did. Surprisingly they say I'll get another 10k out of them. Well I will for one of them. The others are getting pretty thin.

I'll be aiming for some new rubber within the next 6 months for sure. I'll definitely be getting 5 and rotating all of them for even wear.

          So thanks for advice

I get about 80,000km out of the BFGs in 18months rotating just the 4 every 10,000km.

At $400 a corner, replacing 4 at once is enough - can't come at spending the additional for the spare as well

False economy Clancy - if you had the 5th in rotation you'd see 25% more kays before replacement as a minimum!
              Cheers

May be worth a drive to Sydney where you will get them at close to $300 per tyre. Try Tempe Tyres.

If you left a brand new spare untouched, by the time you're done with the other 4, the spare is past its "use by date". Might as well keep all the tyres the same, including the manufacture date.

In 18 months the tyre is well within 'use-by date'

Perhaps but forking out $1600 doesnt hurt as much as $2k

Too many stories about 'grey imports' for me

And if you wanted to change tread pattern or size by the time the 4 are worn but there is still that brand new spare...?

There is really no financial benefit in rotating 4 and paying for 4 every 80,000km vs rotating 5 and paying for 5 every 100,000km.

Anyway, there are a few good branded tyres around the mid $200 mark like the Toyo A/T2. Hopefully there are some in your area.

5 wheel rotation. Most important check the spare wheel cover nut for over tightening.

Had 2 services where dealer did not do it and had messed up the whole rotation pattern. So next set will be marked in a different manner to ensure that no one can mess up the pattern.

Got told in one conversation that they checked the tyre with most tread and put it in the front as the rotation pattern does not make much sense.
D4D. How long will it last?

I take into account the tread depth and heel-toeing when doing my own tyre rotations.
