  • Prado (Japan Import)

    Hi Folks,

    Help me in this ,

I am looking at two models of Prado(J150) ,2012, 2.7 and 4.0 Both petrol at Japanese Online Auction with almost same prices.
The Prado will be mostly used on road , I have a family of 7 , both are seven seaters but 4000CC petrol has 111 more HP.

Apologies for not explaining my self , this would be my first ever buy of an SUV , have no idea about difference in ride , acceleration , power in both the variants ,
The Question is shall i buy 2.7or 4.0 , which is TXL and TZ G respectively ,
      regards

We don't have the 2.7 petrol here so we can't compare them.

2.7 has no offroad ability due to lack of torque and takes ages to accerlerate. I even saw a 2.7 overtaken by truck when going uphill in Tibet.......Just too weak for Prado.

Most definitely the 4.0L if you plan to put 7 people in it every day. I would hate to see the performance of a 2.7L pushing nearly 3 tonne up a steep hill. The 2.7L will be sitting at 5000rpm (not dual VVTi in the 2012 model) to produce 120kw to get up the hill where the 4.0L will sit comfortably around 3000rpm to produce the same 120kw. If the hill needs more than 120kw to get up then the 2.7L will drop speed (and be overtaken by trucks) whereas the 4.0L will not slow.

The 4.0L will therefore be quieter, will not drop gears to lift the engine rpm all the time so it will seem effortless to drive. The 4.0L may use more fuel overall but the grin factor when you put the foot down and the car actually moves will be worth the extra cost in my opinion. The main differences with this class of vehicle are they are heavier so there is more mass to move, they are less aerodynamic so there is more wind resistance and they have wider tyres to carry the heavier load which also creates more rolling resistance. This all points to needing more power and therefore greater fuel consumption to be able to provide the same on road driving experience as smaller cars.

I have a 4.0L and i only need to lightly touch the throttle. Most of the time i am off the throttle and rolling due to the lack of engine breaking in a petrol auto.

                  Hi,
Can you tell em about your 4000 Petrol Prado , is it With hill Assist, and other options , and when you buy hem in Japanese Auction , the full options TZ G is about 7000 USD expensive then TZ which lacks the options like , Air suspension , Hill assists etc (is the extra spend worth the extra options , ?

                  regards
