  • What Dual-Cab 4 x 4 to buy as wifes car

My wife's 2005 Adventura has to go to heaven. I am not selling my Prado 2004 1KZ - my daily drive, and my outdoor adventure that will outlast me (only done 330k).
She has suggested that a used Duel Cab Hilux with rear cab would be good to tow the occasional horse-float and store all her horse gear and also use as daily drive to work. (Her hobby is the horse - mine is my Prado).
I see an opportunity for a suitable vehicle as an alternative to my Prado for central Australia trips that I do for 16 days each year - and use the Prado for regular extended Vic. high country and my snowy mountains trips.(Am I being greedy?)
So What to do?? We need a used 4x4 duel cab with rear cab, max $50k and looking to buy in August. (I have suggested a Prado but the specs required don't suit!)
Any serious advice in this curious but exciting dilemma would be appreciated? I know what aftermarket extras I would need - but vehicle???

I've borrowed a BT-50 while our friends drive our Prado to Perth - I hate it! Their one has a canopy and no reversing sensors or camera so it's super hard to see out the back. If our 9yr old stands behind it he doesn't appear over the tailgate (ie is invisible).

Coming from a Subaru Outback then 150 series Prado I find the wheelspin quite disconcerting - the traction control kicks in all the time in the wet & dry because it has more power than the Prado but is putting it all through 2 wheels that have no real weight on them. It also has a woeful turning circle.

Not sure if that helps - my suggestions would be something with a reversing camera/sensors and full time 4wd.

I am happy with the dmax. No frills but comfy enough, has coped a flogging and doesnt miss a beat.

If kids are on the cards in the life of this vehicle, pain in the butt to get kids seats in and out and no leg room, even for todlers.

If the budget is $50k, lots of choices.

Some may not like it but we got a Triton as a 2nd beastie. For that price you could get a brand new one (depends on model)with canopy, lift kit, bullbar, winch, towbar, rearbar. Had ours 2yrs and no problems at all so far. Also it has what they call super select in the upper models. Basically rear wheel drive but you can shift into all wheel drive on the fly up to 100kph and leave there if need be. Has open centre diff so can be an all wheel drive if you so choose. We do that if it's been raining and in the mountains and the car feels great. Also 3t towing (not that i really would with any ute). Also 4wd and low range 4wd.
And the one thing that sold us on our when we were looking is the rear seats have heaps of room especially leg room. Baby seats, no problem, tall people no problem. May not be the best but for the price you can't really go wrong. But yes, any ute you get especially with a canopy i would strongly suggest getting a reverse camera for it. Can't see a damn thing behind them.

Ill throw the Amarok into the afray. Have a spare one we use for towing race trailers and stuff. Awesome bit of kit. Id highly suggest driving one to try. Ours is the 4 Cyl too, the new V6 is even better!

Another vote for the Dmax. The most reliable Diesel on the market.

Ive got a PX2 XLT Ranger manual as a work ute now, and I'm rapt in it (even if it is a ford! lol). Pulls like a train and is real torquey, and has a heap of tech as well.
              Cheers.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I can't look at an Amarok Piggy but swore off European Vehicles a number of years back due to parts cost and poor service. The budget includes add-ons and extras such as canopy if needed, so realistically will be about 30 to 35K for purchase. Surprised no one gave the Hi-Lux a wrap - maybe typical of Prado owners! Will have a good look at the Isuzu. All great fun really and a chance for a backup 4x4 for me if the Prado gets old or sick. Thanks everyone!

I always said I wouldn't go euro. I'm amazed at the Amarok. We chose it over a hilux and ranger and dmax.

To date we've had nil issues with it. Which sadly is less than my Prado!

Mine started overheating with 100000 on the clock as soon as it had to work, like going up to montville or towing the boat back from Noosa up the big hill. Was very very disappointed in it being a Isuzu so I got rid of it.

Mates got an Isuzu and has loaded it up with Alloy cab on the back, and tows his Jayco with it. Loves it.

D MAXs get a lot of good reviews and I have spoken to plenty of owners that love them. Doesn't have the bells and whistles of the others but that is probably a bonus.
I'm due to replace my ute and to be honest it will be a DMax. I drove the new SR5 Hilux and was suitably underwhelmed.

Just got back from the sticks, was surprised at the number of Colorado 4-door tray back utes pulling vans and campers. No idea what power plant they run but some had large vans out the back.
Also drove an Amorok, 4-door, canopy ute, went OK but noisy as buggery. Could not carry on conversation with back seat passengers, very disappointed.
Brother-in-law has the D-Max ute, needs about a 5-point turn to get into a carpark. This woeful turning circle has been a problem for years, yet they have not been improved.
Rare to hear any Mazda (or Ford) owner happy with their purchase. Google up the Ford's oil pump drama. If you leave the sump draining too long…….engine out. One novel mechanic tilted the car to about 30 degrees and got the pump to prime, saved pulling the engine.
First mod with all these energy conserving cars is to replace the alternator with something old school, unless you like replacing batteries.
