  • Fuel Gauge Sticking? Then dropping quick

Hi, I was just heading off on a trip up north WA in my 2009 120 and the day I left I filled up the tanks as usual with diesel and set off.
I knew I had at least 1000km as I was towing, but noticed my fuel gauge not moving from full, then it very slowly went down ( I'd dome 513km and it was between 3/4 and 1/2 on the first tank) then at 590km's the green 90l light can on and the gauge was back on full again!!!--I know I had enough fuel to get me between roadhouses but it was still a worry as I was spending a week in Karijini NP-where I would have a 200km round trip to get fuel. The second tank level reduced on the gauge as normal

Has anyone else had this issue? I alway fill up both tanks, with no problems, so this is why it came as a shock.
I have very little knowledge of how these systems work is it electronic or a float system?( that could be sticking??)
I always get 170+ litres in if I fill up from low. and my fuel economy doesn't change, its just the gauge!!!
    thanks

On a long run you can catch the fuel gauge going from the 180l indication (180-90l ish) to the 90l (90l to 0l ish) indication (green 90l light) as fuel is constantly circulated between tanks I always look at my gauge as how much of 180l I have rather than two tanks.

Thanks Hobes, but I think you missed what I was saying. The needle doesn't move for at least 500k's from full, then drops to nearly empty(180-90) or straight onto the second tank. But doesn't do it on the last 90l tank?

        Standard operation.

180 litres. Gauge will show full.
When your gauge drops to half. It will go back up to "full" and the 90 ltr light comes on to say you are on your second tank.

In reality. Your using both tanks the whole time due to the jet Venturi pump.

You will never see below half from a full tank. Only when the 90 litres light is on.

Yes, a few Prado owners have an issue with the fuel gauge fluctuating wildly. I experienced it myself. It's like the fuel sender is sticking and showing false readings. It would sometimes show normal levels, then it drops. The distance to empty also fluctuates accordingly.

Remarkably, all went back to normal after I went away for a month and didn't use the Prado.

Thanks Piggy.however, I've had the car for years and it's only just started to do it. Previous to this issue.I have found that in normal operation that from a full 180l, the needle does go down to just before empty. Before the 90l light comes on and the needle is back at full for the 2nd tank.

I need that type of miricle- I think I find myself looking at the gauge more than the road ha!

                That's not normal operation.
I regularly drive a number of 120's and all drop to half then go back to full and 90l light comes on.

I agree with Piggy as to the operation of my gauge in the 120.

                      From the manual:

The fuel tank will be changed from the main fuel tank to the sub fuel tank according as the remained fuel in the main fuel tank. The "90L" indicator light in the gauge comes on when the sub fuel tank is being used. At the same time, the fuel gauge changes. When the indicator light is off,the needle at "F" or "1/1" means approximately 180 L,and when the indicator light is on, the needle at "F" or "1/1" means approximately 87 L .

Meaning: At 90 ltrs your at "Half tank" hence why it changes back to full and 90L light at half tank.

in effect, running two tanks from one fuel gauge with Auto switching. at physically half empty, your at half gauge. They then auto switch to the 2nd tank and show a full gauge sweep for that tank (With 90L light).

There is also a section that says:

On inclines or curves, due to the movement of fuel in the tank, the fuel gauge needle may fluctuate or the low fuel level warning light may come on earlier than usual
