  • 2016 DPF dramas

    Hi all,

Thought I'd buyer share my experience while driving from Newman to Kalgoorlie the other week. We were about 130km south of Newman when all of a sudden, this light came on the dash which I'd NEVER seen before. A quick look in the handbook showed it was the DPF light, showing the filters were full. I followed the directions and drove at a steady speed for a while (not difficult being on the highway).

The light stayed on for about an hour, which I thought was a bit odd. After that time, the light started flashing! Looked up the handbook again and it suggested there's some kind of problem and to contact the dealer! Well it was a Sunday, and we were in the middle of nowhere, so that wasn't an option. I decided to keep going towards Kalgoorlie, about 700km to go.

After a fair while the light eventually went back to constantly on, and then finally went away. The light was on for a total of about 300km. In my opinion, this doesn't sound right..

Went to Toyota on Monday who said "blah blah it's normal etc etc", but I told them I wanted them to have a proper look. I do a lot of remote and rural driving, and can't afford to be stuck because of a DPF fault. It's booked in to be looked at on next Monday. I bet they'll say there's no issue..

Back story - 2016 GXL Prado, 35,000km, was towing a camper trailer at the time, was doing about 95km/h

You should look at the thread already under DPF in diesel section. I have had my DPF replaced after 23000km. Was using excess fuel and blowing white smoke on a burn. You probably have the same issue.

    Thanks

Hey, yeah I did read that thread the other day, that's what got me so concerned. I'm also burning lots of fuel .. 11L/100km normally on highway, but up to 16-18L/100km when towing! Sounds like I should push for a replacement. Were Toyota upfront with you, or did they try to tell you it was all good?

Toyota were pretty upfront with me and said it needed replacement. Fuel consumption is so low now. I think I've dropped a good 1.5 to 2l/100km since the replacement. Car even seems to have more go.
Just demand the DPF get replaced.

First tank after replacement, 70% city 30% country 10.3l/100km. Towing 13.2l/100km. Current tank mainly city driving 9.8l/100km. Average used to be around 11.5 and was going up. I have seen high 5's to low 6's cruising at 70km/h. Far better fuel usage. Also seems to use less fuel when burning as well. Very happy at this stage I can only hope it stays that way for sometime.

              Thanks Cuda
I am getting 9-10 so it sounds as if mine is OK at this stage (Jan 2016 build). I tend to spot when it is doing a burn due to the higher idle and try to hold it in lower gears if around town during that phase. Must admit the whole DPF thing seems to add complication to driving and ownership, but I would rather have it than spray particles around the town (only other option is another fuel type).

Hey Cuda, That is my average 11.5 (2016 GXL Auto) for the last 3 or 4 tanks, mainly 80/20 city highway driving. I asked them at the last service to do a manual regeneration of the DPF but they just said the car will do it. Is it better to say white smoke and high fuel use to get them to have a look at it.

                Thanks

I just saw the thread about the ECU reprogram recall, so I will book it in.

If your not blowing white smoke its probably ok. The new ECU program will most likely help but say you are worried about your fuel usage and they might have a look at it. I was told the white smoke was normal and is written in the user manual but only started to occur when my consumption was going up. Turned out to be a carbonised 5th injector.

                    Thanks

Toyota said it all checks out okay, and they did a manual burn just in case, but couldn't get it to fault again. I told them my fuel consumption does seem a bit high as well but they didn't seem to be too phased (it's not their car obviously). I'll certainly be making an angry phone call is it fails going towards.

What mods have you done to the vehicle? Seems high to me if stock standard.

Something is definitely a miss. Have you had the transmission ECU update done? How many k's have you done? I am cruising at 100km/h and using 7-8l/100km with a 2 inch lift. What did they do to check the DPF? Did they just check it with Techstream? They need to check the 5th injector. Also how frequently does your vehicle do a burn? Revs at idle will increase to 900RPM for Auto box. You might also be able to smell the exhaust difference when burning. When mine was acting up it would burn at 250km everytime. New DPF varies and has gone as far as 400km before burning. Ask for printout of DPF data which should show amount of regens etc. Sounds like they are just fobbing you off. Get yourself a Scangauge 2 or similar so you can monitor DPF temps.

Hope I have helped a bit
