  • 2.8 vs 3.0

Hi Guys. I have a 2010 GXL D4d 3.0 with less than 100K on the clock and I am considering upgrading to the 2.8.

I would like to hear from members who have done likewise and what their opinions are regarding the two engines.

I tow 1,5 ton boat so any comparison on towing ability would also be appreciated.

    Cheers

Given the issues some guys are having with the DPF I'm not sure I would do it. Change the injectors (at 120k) clean intake and fit EGR plate and happy motoring with the existing 3ltr I reckon.

I moved from a 120 with the 3.0 into the 150 with the 2.8. The weight difference was something I noticed initially. The 150 feels heavier - though with my 1.5t van on the back the 2.8 feels a much more solid tow vehicle than the 120 did.

I didn't fit any air bags to the 150. I'd never tow with them again and can see why suspension engineers suggest they are avoided for towing...

The auto box ratios from 1 to 4 are very similiar and 5th and 6th are tall on the 2.8, towing in 4th is roughly the same revs from both vehicles.
      Cheers
      Micheal.

It's the age old saying is it better the devil you know than the devil you don't ?

Obviously there are known issues with the 3lt from injectors to Poor piston design
And the 2.8 well who knows not far enough along to show possible issues

I did the upgrade last year from 120 D4D to 2.8. The 2.8 is quieter and the extra gear would be great if the car used it more. Power to weight seems about the same, so no real extra performance. I think the 120 is a better vehicle (lighter, easier to remove seats, bigger tanks, more space under bonnet), but it misses out on the new safety tech, which was my primary reason for upgrading.
