Hi all, I know this has probably been done before it but the threads are old and want to advice please.
Looking at getting the newest Blackvue 650 front and rear camera. and have 3 questions.

    1. Is Blackvue still one of the best to get or are there new alternatives that match Blackvue?
    2. Where would I mount the rear camera?
    3. Is the rear camera necessary?

Any advice would be great. Thanks

The BlackVue is an excellent unit, video quality in both day and night is good, it's got many good features, and the unit is fairly unobtrusive. Street Guardian is also another good unit to consider.

Mounting the rear camera would be done on the glass towards top of the rear windscreen within the acr of the rear window wiper. This way the wiper can keep the glass clear and allow vision in rain, dirt etc.

There's a 10% coupon on Ebay, and sometimes a 20% coupon one only just ended where you can pick these up for a good discount.

Is a rear camera necessary? No but it's really good to have, when Murphy is driving and gets rear ended with only a front cam he will wish he had the rear cam. The PowerMagic unit is also good to get, then you can record while parked and not run your battery flat plus your wiring can be easily tucked away and not use a lighter socket.

So they advertise it as a 1080. But tell you to run it as 720 as it won't work properly otherwise.
        No gps location or speed.
        Looks pretty average to me.
If you look around you'll find same unit for under $20 on some of the import websites.

Old story. You get what you pay for.

I've bought a few ebay dash cams over the years. Never again. Shit parts quality, shit batteries. It's such a false economy. Next 1 will be a decent brand.

I bought a Navman 680 for recommended retail price....., and I think it is good.
My partner has Blackvue, and I think it is brilliant. Not far away from the gopro video quality. With discount, it is just a liitle dearer than mine.
So I suggest buying a quality one when on sale.

Do you mean the camera is mounted on the top or on the glass, because I am thinking of openning the rear door if mounted on the glass.

+1 for this. I am using the same sort of unit with wifi function. No need of screen works on iPhone with app. Picture quality is A1. I dont need gps/location/speed. There are other options for these things. Its more than 9 month old n still working good. Does have g-sensor and work great. If i open the door it turn on for 15sec by itself n shut off. It doesn't have battery so no tension that battery will blow. But again each to their own. I am happy with my $55 spend and it does the job.

Im on the same mind of thinking with the door opening etc. One option would be the roof light surround near the rear door but that would look kinda crappy and I can imagine it bing knock a lot when putting item etc in the rear.

I have gotten one or two cheap ones before like this and its true you get what you pay for. This time I want to spend a little bit and get a good quality one.
Also look out for the cheap ones as on hot days some may not work with the temp being so high

Yes the camera gets mounted on the rear window near the top in an area the rear windscreen wiper covers. The cable runs under the trim surrounding the rear window, down in to the door and then through the wiring loom conduit that passes from the door to the car on the drivers side. This way the wiring is completely hidden and nothing can get snagged.

Also try to find one with a super capacitor instead of a battery. Lithium ion batteries don't like getting really hot like when a car is parked in the sun in summertime. Personally a rear camera is not essential, although nice. You can usually see enough from the front camera if you get rear ended to show that you were/weren't in the right. Obviously you won't get number plates etc. Night time is really bad for a rear camera as it has to deal with looking into the dark and then getting headlights shone straight at it.

I'll add a vote for Street guardian, good quality gear.

                        Cheers, Nova

I am thinking about the non-GPS Blackvue since: cheaper, GPS speed and location nice but not essential, non-GPS will run a lot cooler. I know this unit does not support a rear camera but as my first dashcam I would like to keep it simple.

+1 more for the Street Guardian. No problems in my work ute which has spent a lot of time in central WA with no heat related issues.
