  • Mixing Rims - 120 Steels and 150 Steel

    Hi All

    I run stock 120 steel rims with Goodyear Wrangler 256/65R17 .I’ve been given a factory 150 steel rim.

    The only difference I can see is the +10mm difference in the offset for the 150 rim.
    I’m thinking of using it as a second spare to be used only as a backup when going bush.

    Does anybody. know if I was to have this slightly different (wider) offset on one wheel, would cause problems or damage to the drive train.

    Well I am using a steel 120 rim and tyre as my second spare on my 150. I think the critical thing is the tyre sizing diameter. The slightly different offset should mean bugger all [I hope] but it is the second spare after all. Having one means you wont need to use it......

      That 5mm reduction in offset makes putting that 120 wheel on your 150 illegal. FYI..

        Yes, i'd only use the same size and make of tyre.

        It's only 5mm per wheel. if I did need to use it, i'd swap wheels to only fit it to the rear axle.

          If the cop in the middle of the Simpson or the CSR has a] a tape measure and b] a data base of rim offsets for all 4wds then I will cop it sweet......but at least it will have got me to where I can get back to legal.

            As long as rolling diameter is pretty close to the other and in the rear axle I think you'd be fine. But I wouldn't leave it on permanently or on bitumen.

              It'll all turn to sh!t if you roll it and want to claim on insurance.. just saying

                  For the few time I’d carry it let alone use it, but murphy says if you’ve not got it, you will need it.

                  It would be only be fitted to get out of the proverbial. I’d change it as soon as I could.

                    straying off topic a bit - sorry to hijack - i'll wear what I cop

                    MalP - so 265/65/17 fit ok on the stock 120 rims?

                    I've got a stock steel with standard 225/70 (from memory) that I use as a 2nd spare. Car has alloys and 265/65.

                    would be great news to me if i could run the same size tyre on whichever rim i've got ?

                      The 120 had 2 versions of the steel rims. 17x6 and 17x7.5. The 225/70R17 would have been fitted to the 17x6. A 265/65R17 is not recommended fitment on the 17x6 as it is too narrow.
