  • Dual Battery Setup in boot

    Hi All,

Just thought i might ask here to see if this makes sense. I am adding wiring from the front to the back of my 120 V6. As the draws + fridge box + battery holders are modular I need to make this modular so i can add and remove things as needed. as such I propose the following. I already have the 25mm2 cable, (which is why i am using such thick cable) and I have the batteries (2x 100ah GEL).

The fuse+relay box i was thinking something like this (or something home made)

The 80AMP & 50 AMP fuses I was thinking as re-settable circuit breakers

Would anyone make changes to this?

With everything plugged in (camping/touring setup)

Normal driving setup (nothing in the back)

If you're running 25mm2 cable why bother with the DC Charger?

I would probably only increase the 8mm2 cable to the rear anderson to 6 B&S (~13mm2)
    Cheers

good point... I am guessing then I would need an isolator... though just thinking is it OK to charge a GEL and the lead acid (Starter battery) on the same cable ok? I heard that charging different chemistry may be bad...

Without knowing your setup in detail, I'd query the 50amp fuse placement. Are you not fusing the trailer wire close to the battery in the fuse box? The fuse is there to trip in the event of the wire creating a dead short and dumping all power through the car's chassis, so ideally needs protection close to the battery.

I'm not a fan of those auto-reset type circuit breakers. Jaycar sell these which have proven reliable, just my two cents:

Thanks qwerty_steve! I was thinking using that type of circuit breaker. I am also not a fan of the auto rest ones.

In regards to the 50A breaker, that (in my head) was to take care of any shorts on the trailer and also stop the full 80AMP getting pulled though the 50A wire and 50A anderson plug.. I was also thinking of having that plugged in before the DCDC so that is always coming off the engine rather than the DCDC or Batteries

Don't go sticking an 80 or 100 amp breaking on an 8mm or even 13mm2 cable - the cable will fry before the breaker trips...

I'm using a 50 amp (auto reset) on my Traxide Isolator with 6 B&S cable and an Optima that can pull serious amps when its is a low state - that breaker hasnt ever (nor should) trip.

Th 80Amp is on the 25mm2 cable. The 50Amp is for the 6 B&S and is only a short run :-)

Cabling hardwired for trailer, and protected from front fuse. I assume you have DC/DC or voltage relay in trailer.

The power cable between the start battery and the auxiliary battery will have charge travelling either way depending on which battery has the higher charge.
Wouldn't this cable need 2 relays? One close to the start battery when current flows from start to auxiliary and a second relay close to the auxiliary when current flows from auxiliary to start battery?
