  • KZJ95 oil leak from Turbo, never had this before

    Hello
I have a KZJ95 manual which is getting close to 600,000km. I regularly check under the vehicle as i have had seals goes on the diff and transfer case before. Today i was under her as i am going to do an oil change. When i went under i noticed some wetness on the diffs short shaft, i checked and it was engine oil and above it is the turbo housing which was wet underneath and had a couple of drips on it.
Any ideas about what could be causing this?
    Thanks

    Some further information.
I did the oil change and idled her for ten minutes. There was no noticeable oil drips. I also put the accelerator down and checked the exhaust and there was no smoke.
On inspection this pipe on top of the turbo looks like it has being wetted with oil

At 600K t is entirely conceivable that your blowby has increased due to the inevitable wear in the rings/bore. Pop off the hose at the intercooler inlet ( you may have to remove the intercooler to get clearance) and I am guessing that you may see that the intercooler is full of dirty oil mist. Your engine is just old and tired like me; I have more blowby than when I was 20yrs old too.
A compression check, or better a leakdown test, would confirm gas getting past the rings, in which case it is time for an overhaul or replacement. An oil catch can will stop the oil mist being fed back into the turbo inlet (that is the extent of the EGR system in this Prado, it recycles it's own cr@p) but it won't do anything for the normal wear.
Alternatively, there are oil feed and drain pipes connected to the turbo, perhaps one has sprung a leak at the gasket, or the turbo itself is letting oil out.
      cheers

Thanks for the reply Steve, the Prado still looks so good (its actually the upgraded VX 99/2000 model) but i get it is getting worn inside like happens to the best of us.
Im doing a 600km round trip early next week so since i know where the oil level currently is due to the oil change today i will compare it to that when i get back.
If i can run it just like this and get a few many more thousand KM out of her then im content with that as i dont tow heavy loads so i am easy on her. I have had a leaky front transfer case seal before and i just topped that up every two months with about 50mls until eventually it didnt leak anymore.
I dont think i will be that fortunate in this case but i dont want to go digging in to it unless a catastrophic failure is nigh.
I have read about people disengaging the EGR system but ive no idea how to do that safely but i suppose that would firm up whether its the pistons or something else around the turbo.
I have a compression tester but nothing that would do this car, nor a leak down tester.
I better pack an oil pack just in case
        Cheers

As Steve posted, these old things breathe a lot of oily residue which will be evident in your intercooler and associated pipework.
But it doesn't worry them, the intercooler even has a drain to remove oil from its lowest point back to the inlet manifold when the engine pulls a partial vacuum on over-run.
I notice you have the stock clamps on your turbo boost pipes. These are all worth changing for some worm drive style, especially the ones on the throttle body.
When you're at the turbo, check the engine breather pipe. It runs from the cam cover to the turbo inlet. It will be wet with oil from the engine's blow by and with age the short rubber hose goes as hard as wood, weeping oil. There may not be any clamps on the hose either, mine had none.
So give her a clean down, check the breather hose and fit decent hose clamps. Even if she's a massive breather, it will all stay inside if your pipework and fittings are up to scratch.

Good tips thanks Carco, il remove some of the manifold so i can see it better, give it a good clean on the outside with degreaser, and then see if i can see what condition each pipe work and fitting is in. Ive some spare worm drives so will do that too.
I will report back in due course
            cheers

So ive done another 650km. Theres further wetness underneath the turbo so whatever it is it isnt a once off.
Ive checked the oil level and its the same as when i left so nothing of major leaking freakout is happening.
My plan is to just keep driving her as is and il update when i get time to investigate further which fortunately doesnt seem to need to be right at this moment.

I have the same engine in my 120 series and there was a lot of oil weeping out between the intercooler and the intake manifold, I took off the flexible coupling, cleaned the throat of the butterfly, washed out the intercooler with petrol and then installed a Provent Mann and Hummel catch can between the cam cover outlet and the intake to the turbo so that oil-free air goes into the intake system.

Thanks i may just do this. Where is the butterfly, is that on the turbo side or over near the injection area on the other side?

In my opinion a catch can on a KZ is an unnecessary expense that just adds to your under-bonnet woes.
If she's all sealed properly, the engine will eat any blow-by and remain clean externally.
A catch can makes sense on a turbo petrol engine that returns oily vapour upstream of an AFM. The AFM filament reads incorrectly due to the oil and the actual mixture is all over the place due to the oil vapour in the air charge, which usually ends in detonation.

That's true, but if you see what comes out of the catch can......... I personally would rather not feed that cr@p back into my engine, even given that it is a dirty oily diesel. Another effect of recirculating the oily mist is that it coats the inside of the intercooler. The intercooler will lose efficiency due to the insulating effect of the oily residue, plus the butterfly body will end up getting fouled with the soot and rubbish. I had mine off at 120k when I did the head, it wasn't too bad, but it will not get better with age!
                        cheers
