  • Radiators - Which ones are good?

I want to replace the radiator on my KZJ95 auto. Is it worth paying $500 for a Denso rad, or are there others that are just as good for cheaper? There is a very wide range of prices and core thicknesses on ebay. Are any of them any good?

As it is a critical component on a diesel (lack of coolant will destroy a diesel as fast as a lack of oil, and remember that this radiator system cools the engine oil as well) I would be hesitant to put in a cheap unit unless I had some confidience in the factory and the units. I went with Denso, it is the same as the original Toyota fitted. If you want alloy, I have had Aussie Desert Cooler recommended. PWR is alleged to be good, but my old mechanic mate had one built for his 80's Rangie, that thing split where the tubes entered the header tank and PWR did not give a.....! Whoever at PWR that designed it had no clue about expansion of metals.
    cheers

I bought a cheapy when she was overheating, turned out to be cracked head (KZ auto) but that's another story.
The original was a double tube factory item, did the job but the bottom 2" looked pretty sad.
The cheapy was single tube. I questioned it and the reply was the new radiators run an oblong tube which gives the same area as two round tubes.
Of course she still boiled (due to the cracked head) so I lashed out and bought a gold plated Natrad, nobody local could supply Denso.
Bugger me if it wasn't identical to the cheapy, apart from a different radiator cap.
Moral was, I fixed the head and now I've got a couple of spares.

Well I decided to get the Denso for peace of mind. I really don't like having to do a job twice, so I'll just replace the Denso that is in there with another one. The old one still looks OK except for the bit where the cap screws in - the plastic has gone soft from the overheating when the head went, and I'm pretty sure it won't seal 100% anymore.

When you get your new one, can you please post how many rows of tubes it has.
Single row of elongated tubes or two rows or round tubes.
If you can get a two row Denso for $500 you've done well. Mine single row Natrad cost lots more, although this was at Mount Isa.

            Hey carco
just hope nothing goes wrong with your Natrad, even though they advertise Aust-wide warranty , you have to take it back to where you bought it from !
PITA if you're not anywhere near them if something happens.
How do I know , personal experience. never again.
