  • Cold rattle, but not the death rattle...

Not sure if these symptoms will sound familiar to anyone, but worth a shot...

For the last 8 months or so, the car will make a very noticeable rattle when it's cold. Sounds worse if I put my foot down. No loss of power, just a really loud rattle. But, like clockwork, as soon as the temp gauge hits a certain point, it stops completely. No white smoke, the injectors (and their seals!) are good and the screen is clear.

I'm thinking that although the temp gauge is working, perhaps there is a sensor somewhere that regulates the mix when it's cold, and this sensor just isn't working properly. As soon as the engine is warm, it doesn't matter anymore so no more rattle.

    Any thoughts?

I have the same symptoms and the injectors were checked and serviced by Mr Toyota. I don’t have a good feeling about this from what I have read on PP. I look forward to any replies

My son's 150 has been doing this for a long time. Had the squirters checked and the numbers were fine.
He's going to replace them anyway (it's done 150,000k) to see if it improves.
Doesn't sound good when cold that's for sure.

It didn't used to make this sort of rattle before it started 8 months ago, that's for sure. And again, the fact that it will immediately stop as soon as the temp has reached a certain level (literally, if I have my foot down going uphill, and it's rattling away, as soon as the temp gauge gets to a certain point, it immediately stops), makes me think that there is a malfunctioning sensor that is causing the mix to be for a warm engine. My injectors have about 80,000km on them right now - I don't intend to throw new ones in there for at least another 70,000....

              Guys,
My Prado having this same experience as last 10 years and from the day one from the dealer.
I reported with Mr.Toyota and he told me that this symptom is normal, because diesel engines are made with a large clearance between piston and the cylinder wall to allow expansion. therefore, I din not anything and just driving and driving.......
In a day time, I do let my engine to run in a idle for 10 minutes before drive off. (I have good neighbors and therefore no trouble for me).
Any idea on what's going on here?
              Thanks

I had this not so long ago, did an engine flush with penrite engine flush stuff (cant recall name of it) changed oil and filter drove for 1000km and did flush and oil and filter again. sounds much better on start up.
There is a post on here about blocked oil pickup screen in 120 series engine I think.

Mine is not from blocked oil pickup, very anal about checking that.

Am going to check map filter & clean maf sensor as suggested above, will report after.

Once the seals have been replaced there should not be any blow by and oil/crud should not block the pickup oil return. History of my car has been serviced by Mr Toyota since new and seals replaced 2014 under warranty. It would appear that their servicing regime has been good as the vehicle has been almost trouble free So this knock is worrying given previous reports on PP but I’m still waiting for further comments. You guys need to get injector feedback values done when engine is cold. The cold rattle is not related to the blocked sump pickup.

You can get the Techstream cable off ebay and download the software. Then you can do your own readings yourself rather than taking it to Toyota and leaving the vehicle overnight.

                          Hi Guys

OK cleaned maf sensor & map filter

maf not really dirty but drowned it anyway

as for map filter , I think I found the right one, as well as being a filter it's a one way valve as well

so gave it a shot of cleaner thru it had a fair amount of crud in it

made slight improvement, so have ordered new filter ( $55 ) toyota know how to charge for little plastic bits that are only 25 mm x 25 mm.

toyota don't call it a map filter , it's a gas filter, so should get it tomorrow & see if makes anymore improvement.

as for techstream cable got one that doesn't work for me, so a bit apprehensive about getting another one, got refund and was able to keep it's a 32bit (was supposed to be 64 bit).

                          I'll get one eventually

                          Tony

How many km's since your injectors were replaced if ever? The general consensus for non DLC injectors is to change them at 120,000km. I had my injectors done on my 150 slightly earlier than that and the engine is definitely quieter. Quieter than it was when new in fact.
