  • Rear springs for loaded 120

    Hi,
I have Lovells TRR-119 MD coils in the back, and when I really load the Prado (fridge, draws, extra fuel, extra water, recovery equipment, food, chain saw etc) it is visibly heavy ended and sits on its ass, and that is without anybody in it. I do not use it as a daily drive, so most of the time it will be loaded for trips, or longer expeditions.
My question is, should I leave it as it is and put in airbags to lift it up when really loaded, or should I change the springs to Lovells heavy duty, or to any other HD springs (recommendations please). Or should I change it to heavy duty springs and put airbags in as well.
(The current shockers are BES-A713, but I will be changing those to 24-217897)
    Cheers
    David

If its not your daily drive, and mostly driven fully loaded, there is no point taking the airbag path - just replace the suspension.
    Cheers

      Hey David,

If you're loading just for big trips, the tallest and stiffest coil you can put in the rear of the Prado is the C59-487 from Dobinsons, it is 280lb/in and 430mm free height. It's a little bit stiffer than your TRR-119 (around 260lb/in), but is much taller by around 30mm.

I run the 487 with airbags in my own Prado, as I also hate saggy rear ends!

The coil rate of the 487 will also be very nicely matched as well to the 24-217897 you are planning on getting. This setup is still quite nice to drive on the streets as well when you are unloaded.

If you are getting the 24-217897 from John at Zordos, he can also supply you with the 487, and he can supply you with firestone airbags (the blue ones), which you can also get kevlar sleeves for that allow you to run up to 60psi in the bags. The airbags will combat any sag on the 487's (which is around 10-20mm worth of ride height from a big load).

487 with airbags, and you can say goodbye to the saggy bum and have an excellent rear end setup with the 24-217897.

Thank you Mark for the great reply, just what I was looking for, I think I will follow your advice. Jut out of curiosity, what is the difference between the Polyair and firetone airbags?
        Cheers

          Hi Mark,
it turns out that the rear shockers have some life in them still, so I will not be getting 24-217897 yet, but I would to change the springs, can I put in the C59-487 while I still have the BES-A713 on, or these two are not compatible.
          Thank you
          David

            Hey David,

You would have even less droop than you have now if you use the 713's with 487's. I would not use this combination under any circumstances.

            I would not use the 713 in the rear of a lifted Prado, see here;
