  • Old faithful....My turbo 3RZ 90

    Gday all,

long time lurker but first time poster. Thought i would chuck up a few photos of old trusty and some information for anyone still dabbling in the 3RZ's and/or 95 series or for anyone contemplating wasting absurd amounts of money on a TRD supercharger or similar but mainly just for a bit of a giggle. So 8 years ago my mate purchased the 95 completely stock and unmolested rolling on factory tyres exerting absolutely nothing special about it at all. He putted about for a bit and i went on several adventures in it and as per usual the mind starting ticking over so first up went on a 2" OME lift, nolathane bushes all round and of course the obligatory Mickey T 33" bajas. The power (or lack thereof) and fuel economy promptly became an issue so of course new filters, plugs, valve shimming etc all went ahead only to find we achieved little to no gains. I had been installing ecu's and remapping delco's and Mitsubishi at the time so we went ahead and started digging about the factory ecu and wiring to see how it all worked and what could be done etc etc. To my shock and horror ol trusty ran bank injection. No wonder the fuel economy was so miserable. Fast forward a few months and adaptronic had released the Select 440 ecu so we promptly ordered it, pulled the whole factory engine loom out, bought a load of heat shrink and connectors and i made a new engine harness from scratch.

Finally sequential injection and no more bloody distributor but instead coil packs from an LS2. In its NA guise the 3RZ was transformed nicely with alot more pep and sub 14L/100km fuel economy. The tuning and set up was pretty straight forward and we were all happy.

Tech info - To go from Distributor to coil on pack make a cover for the dis and feed the signal as Reset on first half for sequential IGN and INJ and use the Crank angle sensor as Crank 360 deg, falling edge reset on 2 missing teeth with the triggering starting at 90 deg.

From there we looked into forced induction and to be honest couldnt find much info on the 3rz so it was time to take a gamble and slap a turbo on. Little did we know how awesome the vehicle would turn out. Being a boilermaker and sheetie made the whole fabrication process alot easier. An exhaust manifold was quickly fabbed up out of sched 40 steam pipe, flanges cut out by hand with a die grinder and old pedestal drill, a fair few beers, a new intake manifold to clear the water to air intercooler barrel etc.

All up this was the finished package (at 154000km on the odo from memory)
TD05 WRX turbo (Way too small)
    Custom exhaust manifold
3" stainless exhaust whole way thru
    Turbosmart 800 FPR
PWR Water to air intercooler (With there cruddy, tiny radiator thrown away and instead replaced with a second full size radiator)
Bosch electric water pump for W2A
7MGTE fuel injectors (They drop straight in)
Custom intake manifold i curved up out of 3MM ally at work
Falcon throttle body with idle valve
LS2 coils (Recently replaced with 2GR Coil on plug packs)
    Select 440 Adaptronic ECU
    Turbosmart EGT and Boost gauge
    AEM LSU 4.9 wideband
    Evo factor BOV
    Apollo Air filter
Braided Oil and water feed lines to the Turbo

This of course caused some transmission problems....The stock W box started getting very rowdy so in went an aluminium flywheel, custom pressure plate, Exedy HD friction plate and the much stronger R series box. Problem was the input shaft was too long and the bellhousing wouldnt match up so it was off to find an R box from a 2TR motor. Swapped a few bits and shes held up to a beating.

Some of the more comical abilities of old faithful include
    Launch control
Antilag (no one ever expects it)
300ish HP at around 12 PSI
A bucket load of square bore/stroke torque
And the fact that it looks like a beaten up old prado thats stupidly fast and makes the boggiest of beach sand look like tarmac.

After years of pestering i finally managed to buy it off him and it sits proudly next to my 75 1HZT troopy and 120 series 1KZ Grande. Ive even given the grande to the misses and use ol faithful daily.

120,000 Kms later and the 3RZ still runs perfect on a completely unopened engine. No rods, pistons or anything. A true testament to the reliability of the worlds most boring motor

Looks awesome! Only giveaway that something may be going on underneath the hood is the radiator behind the bull bar & even that takes a second look to uncover.

good to see the 90s still on the road, they seem to want to last at least a decade more.

Bloody oath. They've become a rock solid platform. Like the 75 series reliability of the Prado world. Some of the done up ones I've seen about look so old school and cool

mine also seems happy to solder on at least a fairly long time yet. a 99 with 250 odd on the clock . i need an auto rebuild soon ,but after that im sure i will enjoy many adventures without the high price tag of a later model. even at the lower end of the prados , in price , im talking , they are quite a reliable bus that give us much in return , compared to the small investment that we/ i have made towards it. i drive it everyday for work and play with a number of local off road days ,two moretan island a frazer,2 yepoon trips in less than two years, i would say its already payed for itself and more.

They still get the double thumbs up from me.
