  • 2005 VX Centre Diff / 4x4 engage / disengage issue ADL

    HI

I've got an 05 VX petrol. Transfer case lever is H-N-L and it has a button to engage/disengage the centre diff lock.

usually when engaging the VSC OFF light comes on and the 4x4 light flashes approx ten times then stays solid - all good. Disengaging is reverse order. usually around 100m of travel at around 40kph

Just spent 2 weeks away on and off dirt roads and beaches and bitumen everyday.

I noticed this trip the engage and disengage seemed to take a lot longer than usual - flash for almost 20 or 30 times or almost 500metres .

came off the beach yesterday and it flashed for an f-ing long time. i was by nature of the roads stuck on bitumen so dropped the left wheels into the dirt on the side and trawled at approx 10-20kph trying to cycle button etc. probably almost 1km right wheels on bitumen and left on dirt. when it let go there was an almighty bang and the lights went off and seemingly back into AWD.

So - where do i begin?

Is there a solenoid actuating the diff lock? how to i test ? who do i take it to? Auto Elec? Toyota (loathed to) or anyone recommend someone in Adelaide who can diagnose and inspect?

Is there a way to test myself?

How long should the engage/disengage process take on the 4x4 system?

    Cheers for your help.

I usually drive forwards a few meters then reverse few meters maybe forwards one more time with a quick tab on and off accelerator

On the back of the transfercase there is a black box about 100mm square, this is the diff lock actuator its little more than a motor that pushes a rod in and out with a couple of sensors to tell the 4wd ecu what position the rod is at, your problem is more than likely diff wind up . How often is the diff lock used? If Not so often it could just be a bit sticky
Sometimes its not possible but try to unlock the diff before you get off the soft stuff

        Thanks Scottkz

Not used enough ! Probably every 6-8 weeks .

I'm leaning toward diff wind up for this last occasion but it's the length of time its taking that's starting to concern me .

This is the first time I've disengaged on bitumen always try and do on dirt .

Is there a way to test or service this actuator ?
