  • Toyota WS Fluid Servicing and Longevity

Does anyone know the Toyota procedure and cost for a transmission fluid service? When I purchased my Prado second hand the service manager said they'd do it for free but I suspect this was just a basic drain and fill without removing all the old fluid via flushing that fills the torque converter etc. Surely such an exercise would be rather expensive unless the service guy was being generous!

Although at first I was a bit annoyed at the Prado's sealed/non dipstick transmission, I read an interesting piece regarding the new Toyota WS transmission fluid they are using and it seems to be top quality stuff. A Toyota Tacoma driver had a Blackstone oil analysis performed on the WS fluid that had close to 100,000km on it without a single change - the lab reports indicated that the oil was in pretty good shape. Although it's always nice to be able to check the fluid on a stick it's good to know its doing its job so well.

    check this thread viewtopic.php?f=10&t=11050#p142349,
this ia all i found about which oil and how to chwnge the oil transmition , for me i finally got 8L of Toyota WS transmition (after long wait since augest 2010) and hopfuly will change it in the coming weekend.
although i said befor ei personally would prefer to completly drain it by removing the oil pan , i've changed my mind due to i couldn't get the filter and gaskets.
also would love to know how they can get the oil in torque convertor out .
from memory the oil pan drain/refil is 3L, if removed i think about 8L, id dry/refil is 12L

Re: Toyota WS Fluid Servicing and Longevity

Thanks for the link. I've searched around the PP site and there are a few posts which touch on the subject but none seem to offer anything conclusive as to price or what method Toyota actually use which I why I started a new thread. Some say they just drain what's in the pan and top up which is what I suspect a Toyota did with mine. Others say it needs to be hooked up to a flushing machine to purge all the old fluid out which could cost near 500 bucks. When I spoke to Toyota they mentioned nothing of flushing the transmission. In my mind its like draining a 1/4 of the engine oil and topping it up with fresh oil.

i suspect they can /need to do it , if the oil is suppose to be cahnged at 160000km after checking that means that the quality of the oil is good so they just drian the oil pan and refil with the 3L fresh oil, i even don't know why the americans do it as described in the FJ fourm, but in my case when i purchased my prado second hand with 165000 km on the clock , i wanted to drain all the oils , but i didn't find the WS here in Egypt so i changed it with Toyota type IV which i shouldn't have done the first place, so i 'm gessing i'll have to follow the americans way on that one, hope it will work , and i'll never touch my transmition oil again.
will keep you posted with the results

Re: Toyota WS Fluid Servicing and Longevity

I asked about changing the fluid at my last service. The dealer told me that the fluid dosn't usually discolour unless you do a lot of towing. They suggested that if I wanted to have the fluid changed, I should wait until 100 000km if I was doing a lot of towing or offroad driving. Changing it before then was a waste of money. The advise the same for 200 series cruisers. The dealer recons they can't flush the transmission as it dosn't have a dipstick to be able to fill fluid while pumping the old stuff out. When they change fluid, the just drop the 3.5L in the sump and refill it with new fluid.

If you have a hoist, I recon it's possible to flush the fluid. Drain sump and fill in the same amount as came out. Add an extra 1L, remove the return hose then start the car to pump out a litre, add 1L, pump out, etc about 5 times should flush the old stuff out of the torque converter. The remaining 1 or 2L in the valve body will just get mixed in with the new fluid.

It would be great if someone could post a DIY on this. The procedure for refilling Tranny fluid on the A750F 5 sp unit seems rather complicated. You're supposed to create a short on the DLC3 with a Toyota Special service tool (or maybe a paper clip) , start the engine then move through the gears in a special pattern and refill when the A/T oil temp light comes on. Gone are the days of loosening the drain plug and refilling through the dipstick tube with good ol' Dexron which you could buy in the auto section in Kmart. I'm still surprised that nobody is making a compatible WS fluid given most Toyotas are running it now. Apparently Mobil/Exxon (not Kendall anymore) manufactures all the oils for Toyota now including this top secret World Standard fluid.

well, i finally flushed my transmition , there is drain plug, overflow plug , refil plug
1- removed the drain , overflow and refil plug.
2- removed the drained oil and measured it was 3.0 L
3- put the overflow and drin plug back
              4- put fresh oil 3.0 L
5- put ther refil plug back.
6- remove the transmition hoses from the radiator.
7- put clear hose( to be able to see the oil colour and to extend the length of the hoses down to the ground).
8- start the car watch the oil goes out untill i had 3.0 L out
              9- stop the car .
              10- remove the refil plug.
              11- put 3.0L fresh oil
12- repeat steps 8,9,10,11 only this time i got 1.7 L and stopped the car as i saw the oil colour started to change.
the overflow plug is removed by Allen KEy.
the drain plug is easily located
the refil plug is unpluged by 24mm key and it is located high right side under your driver seat (for RHD cars )
i used old oil container so i can measure the old oil.
i used oil injection pump that takes 500ml of oil so i can measure the fresh oil.
the ws oil i got is in 4.0 L metal container.

all process took about 30 mineuts with the help of another hand

DId you move the gear selector at all while the engine was idling or did you just leave it in park? How does the vehicle drive? Any problems following this?
I'm assuming with this method you are simply replacing the same quantity of fluid that was removed each time and so no need for the complicated refilling method?

                    no
                    How does the vehicle drive?
a little smoother , hardly noticed

                    so far so good
i had to do what i've done basicly beacouse i changed my trans oil with Toyota type IV , so i just wanted to make sure that i've changed it as much as i could, next time i will only drain the oil pan. having a little faith im Mr. T design and the WS quality to last for 160,000 Km i guess 3.0L would be enough
from my experience with other 4x4's specially jeeps , i used to remove the oil pan and change the oil filter with 4.5 L of oil while the whole transmition takes about 12 L dry -fill ,
(my heart beats was very noticable during the process ) i got away with it this time
no more flushing for me from now on .

I changed the trans oil Today, those instructions certainly make it an easy job. Just be aware that on the D4D the inlet pipe into the Radiator cooler is the lower hose, so I removed the top hose and used a scrap piece of hose from the top outlet on the radiator into my collection jug. I also used a tom thumb oil pump for the refill process.

The service guy at Toyota assured me I didn't need to do the change when I asked about oil, but he sold me some none the less. I showed him a sample of what came out after the job was done and he was a bit shocked, it looked more like used engine oil than Transmission oil!

The transmission has significantly improved after the change, sharper and smoother I reckon.

I don't think I will wait 80 thou until it gets its next change.

                      Cheers Andrew

Once an oil cooler is fitted, the fluid stay pink a lot longer. I've done 40 000km since the last flush and installation of a cooler. The fluid is still pink. I've been checking it every 10 000km for colour. I was planning to flush it every 40 000km initially. I think I'll run it a another 20 000km and assess the situation.

Mine is still pink. Bought the Prado at 80,000km and it is now at 170,000km. The Grande comes with the transmission cooler. Maybe that's why.

No the V6 comes with a trans cooler!

I think I will be adding a cooler in due course myself.
