  • Toyota Prado Recall (Code GGG38) ECM Reprogram

    Hi all,
I am the owner of a Aug 2015 build Prado GXL 2.8 which has been a great car for us and gave us a trouble free 16k awesome trip to from Melb to the Kimberley (including the Gibb) and back via the Nullarbor.

Fuel consumption is the only thing that has been disappointing at 12.5lit/100 (not including above trip) given the official figure is about 8lit/100 combined. I know obtaining 8 is not realistic in the real world however a figure closer to 10 - 10.5 lit/100 would been more in line with my expectation.

I signed up to my Toyota a few days ago and saw there was an outstanding recall listed for my vehicle. Recall is described as a inspect calibration id of ecm, reprogram ecm and replace ecm if reprogram fail. Having called the dealer to include this on my service in two days time the tech said he has just seen the official paperwork on the ecu reprogram. The tech also said this was related to the DPF which from reading the very informative and helpful posts on this forum and other sources has been a problem for some owners.

Has anyone had the ECM reprogrammed previously, aside from the latest recall, and what were (if any) the results??

    Thanks
    B

When I first got my 150 there were a bunch of updates, still have the stickers in the door sill. Most gave a noticeable improvement, but I would only do it if there is a problem.

Hi there, is this recall applicable to the newer 2.8L equipped 150s only?

Hi, I'm not sure whether the recall applies to the older 150 Prado.

You could try adding your vehicle details to the mygarage section of the mytoyota website which should advise you of any upgrades/recalls for your vehicle. You need to enter your VIN number and batch number to register your vehicle. I found the batch number in the front cover of the car service manual.

When I go in to get the car serviced and ECM updated I will ask whether the recall applies to the older 150 Prado as well and let u know answer.

          Regards
          B

My Nov 2014 GXL Diesel (3.0L) doesn't have a recall listed against it under mygarage.

Hey Barnsos thanks for the heads up. And thanks bazzang for letting me know about mygarage. I registered my 2015 2.8 GLX with mygarage and sure enough it is affected by the recall. I've got it booked in for the ecu check next week.

i have a Dec 2016 build 2.8 Prado and when i logged into mytoyota there was no recalls listed for my vehicle but i dropped my prado off yesterday to get the rear bumper painted due to a paint bubbling issue and was advised that the ecu will be reprogrammed.

My dealer (who always seem knowledgeable on detail) says via an email reply that "it is not a recall, but a customer service exercise - Engine ECU re-programme"
I will discuss and probably get it done at the next service since I am not having any problems currently.

Booked my car in for the ECU update this week with City Toyota Perth. The Dealer said it is for customer service exercise - Engine ECU update not a recall. I have no problem with my 2015 Build so far, average 8.6L/100.

I don't think this is related to the DPF replacement that also required an ECU upgrade. I have checked MyToyota and it also says I need to have the vehicle upgraded even though I have had the ECU update relating to the DPF issue.

                            Thanks

                              Hi all,
Took the Prado in for the 40k service today which included the ECM re-program. Service person stated the ECM recall was definitely in relation to the DPF problems with the new 2.8 diesel motor. When I pressed him further on what exactly the problems have been, he couldn't really explain apart from the DPF which may result in excessive fuel consumption.
In fairness a service consultant is not a mechanical expert and he was trying to read the recall advice paperwork without letting me see too much!!
The service report also stated there was an ECU software update done in relation to the transmission. I had mentioned when I took car in about car struggling to maintain the overdrive gears at constant speed on flat roads so maybe the upgrade will help this issue.

As for results I am going on a longer trip with a camper trailer (same load as previous trip) soon so will test out fuel consumption and transmission and report back in a few weeks. On basis on a few short drives shift changes appear smoother but will need to drive for longer to give a more informed opinion.
