  • Grabby brakes

Hi guys. Just wondering if anyone else here has had any dramas with snatchy brakes. About a dozen times since owning the prado I've had an issue where if I hit the brakes quickly they will grab and lock even regardless of the antilock. Only seems to happen if I haven't done any hard braking for a while and if I try to replicate the issue it doesn't do it. I'm not hitting the brakes hard, just very quickly like for roos or dickheads and seems to happen fairly high up in the pedals usual foot and a half of travel. Car has done this since I've had it.

    Anyone else?

    Hi Rob L,

Your Prado has a feature called emergency brake assist ...(or whatever they call it) and from memory it measures the time between taking your foot off the accelerator and applying the brake. If you apply the brakes really quickly after removing your foot from the accelerator the vehicle assumes there might be an emergency. I have only activated it once, when emergency braking, otherwise I did activate it to demonstrate the feature to other drivers.. by driving on an empty street, with foot on accelerator, and taking foot off the accelerator really quickly and suddenly applying the brake, as fast as I could, but with relatively gentle brake pressure, and wow, it really applies the brakes, ....so, it might be that feature perhaps?
Do you still have original brake pads and brake rotors?...if so they might also be getting a bit worn by now so that might also be contributing.. perhaps.

It is exactly as Rob L described.

I drive a 3 door SX and it has happened to me twice.

The first time I was driving at 100 kph down the South Gippsland hwy when a car coming in the other direction did a right hand turn thru the centre median and looked like she was not going to stop.

I hit the breaks quickly but relatively gently and it almost stood on its nose and the left back wheel locked up and the back slewed out to the side. Even with my foot off the break it still took what seemed like 2 or 3 seconds to release.

As far as Toyota is concerned it is functions as designed.

EBA is not one of my favourite TLAs.

Sounds a good explanation Brogers. Brakes are original with about 137k on em but it has done it since I've owned the car at 30k with no appreciable difference.

OK......... well I'm with Sweatpea. I don't like it. Did it to me yesterday when a mobile phone using pedestrian started to step off the curb as I approached. Unfortunately I had a cop car right beside me. Although there was plenty of room it just locked up I was out braked by them because I had to release and reapply and they were in an older colarado dual cab. So much for the marvelous tech. You can't even modulate it, you have to fully release the pedal. About 2 years ago on a road trip it did it when an old boar ran out ahead of me and it locked the fr/lft tire so badly it flat spotted and had to be balanced again. Why have one system that seems to over ride the other?

Obvious question. I'm guessing you can't turn it off so what colour wire is it and where do I find it?

My 09 Kakadu does exactly the same but also locks after an aborted quick take off at a junction. Recently scared the bejebas out of my passenger who would have gone through the windscreen but for her seatbelt.
In my opinion this is a very serious fault, I have driven ABS cars since 95 and never had this problem caused by the addition of the so called emergency brake assist. Heard someone was suing Toyota over it.
Would also be very grateful if a techie can show me which wire to disconnect to stop the EBA but leave ABS working.
I guess it could also be switched off in software but that is beyond me.

On the Kakadu there is a pwr switch under dash that switches off the pre crash section. Is this the same as you are experiencing.
On the pre crash that locks up the seatbelts and applies the brakes, if something happens in front of you.
            Cheers

As stated above this has happened in our 2016 Kakadu and also scare the hell out of your passengers and is annoying.
Cmilton54 where exactly is this switch ? Any photos

Well not so severe, but we could hear the ABS motor kick in while trying to save some Ducklings that came out of no where in the Dandenong ranges. Lucky there was no one behind us. Had to break quite fast but cannot remember if the brake feature discussed here came to play.

I've been trying to find a video or something that shows the EBA in action but cant, there is an animated one that really just explains what it does. has anyone come across a real life video?

If the EBA kicked in you would never forget it.

It scares the crap out of everyone in the vehicle and when the rear LHS wheel locked up and the back looked like it was going to pass the front it created quite an anxious moment for the driver.

Had mine kick in today.. entertaining much.
Some Wally pulled out in front of me and I had to hit the brakes pretty hard.
Locked rear right due to bad wobbles in the road caused by trucks. , then ABS kicked in and released it. Rear front then locked and released. Then all brakes felt like they went off. Car kept speed but then pulled up reasonable quickly.
Worst feeling is when ABS releases and reapplied the brakes. Felt like it was going to take forever.
I'll download my dash cam. Should have tripped the G sensor I imagine and recorded it.

From all accounts it is an experience not to look forward to. Good to know the feature is there if needed!

Also kicks in if you hit the brakes twice in short succession. You don't even have to be hard on the brakes, just light pressure.

                            Hi Phs
                            Just seen your question.
For memory it is just up under the dash panel by the steering wheel assembly.
I will look tomorrow and confirm.
                            Cheers

I have had it happen 3 times. Once was with a extra large furry jumper, that stood up in the middle of the road between dusk and lights finally getting bright enough.
Others were with vehicles that pulled into lane I was in without having room to pull into.

You are right on the seatbelt taking out the wind.
                              Cheers
