  • Wheel Studs

Hi all sorry if this has been discussed but I have done a search and cant find any thing.

A few months ago I had a rear wheel snap off doing 100kms down the freeway it snapped all 6 wheel studs. Now I can only guess that there was either a crack in one and this caused the rest to give way or a couple had cracked and so on . Luckily she landed on the shock support stayed straight and managed to get her to the side of the road with out hitting any one or taking any one out with the wheel.

I have always dealt with one tyre place and I know its not from over tightening as they use a tension wrench every time I have my tyres rotated and wheel alignment done. I can only think that some 6000kms of corrugations in the Kimberly's may have had some thing to do it with it.

When I got her back I was a bit nervous driving her again thinking the same thing might happen on another wheel so I decided to find out if you can get some better then Toyota supplied studs but I'm struggling.

From what I read ARP studs are the best around but they don't make them for prados so I'm told .

Has any one found some ? or know of some thing a little more heavy duty then manufactured ones ?

Look forward to your replies Steve

How do you know that their torque wrench was calibrated and that they used the right torque figure?

Don't often hear of snapped studs if torqued up properly. Probably just got unlucky.

More likely the nuts were not done up properly. Having done many on and off-road excursions, including some single trips in excess of 15,000km, I have never had wheel nuts loosen. One broken stud wouldn't cause the loss of a rim. You only have to have a look at some of the local's rigs in the outback that only run 3 out of 6 nuts to see that they manage to survive without loosing wheels.

Hint for beginners: Always check your nuts with a hand wheel brace before any big trip, and after any meddling by a dealer or other mechanical shop.

My money is on nuts either loosened or left loose. Never heard of a wheel stud problem on Prado's. Remember Patrols, early Cruisers and Paj's all use the same size studs, and they don't fail. Usually failures are linked to nuts being left loose.

We had a failure on a Patrol out in the goldfields after the doodles had the kangaroo jack slip whilst changing a wheel. The new wheel was in place but the nuts were on fully when the car fell. The studs got bent and the nuts couldn't be properly tightened. They drove and the studs snapped off after destroyed the bolt holes in the alloy rim.

Nothing wrong with the genuine toyota studs, as Bushbasher has mentioned recheck after someone else has tightened, only problem ive had was removing a wheel the nut had siezed on the stud and snapped the stud when i undone it and that was because the studs were not cleaned when the wheels were rotated on the service a week prior.

I'm not saying that all your comments aren't wrong but I did speak with the insurance assessor when he looked at the car he told me he had 6 Toyotas including a personal carrier all had rear wheel failures. They are putting it down to aftermarket wheels now I don't know if that is the reason or not. If you seen my Prado it still looks like new apart from the bush pin stripping that wont buff out. I had about 2 seconds notice when the failure happened all wheel nuts where still attached to lugs inside the rim when I picked it up so no loss of nuts just all clean breaks and from memory they all looked fresh so I'm at a loss.

I will just carry on then with the Toyota ones as it seems there are no aftermarket stronger ones for 150series

                Thanks for all your help

One time a tyre shop (tyre experts) snapped one of mine.
Told me, "we used the torque wrench, only 125ft/lbs."
I said well there's your problem. Try 100-110 nm, DUFUS.
Point is don't trust them, their tools or what they tell you.
                  Very uncommon, likely over tightened.
They do stretch quite easily once over tightened, weakened.

So in my exp, fronts are the problem.
Rears that I have heard of are aftermarket wheels.
My local t dealer sell plenty of studs & I keep them in stock.

Are you running genuine or aftermarket whees?

I killed a set of BFGs prematurely after the tyre shop forgot to tighten the castor nuts. No come back on that one.

I changed mine to ARP Lexus IS300 wheel studs after buying aftermarket wheels and finding out I had 3 threads of engagement on the front and 5.5 on the back. The tyre stop and wheel manufacturer said it was enough but I didn't want to risk a wheel falling off in the middle of no where. I probably could have used wheel nuts with longer shank but thought I should do the job the right way first time.
The Lexus studs are longer than standard by 20mm so you need to factor that in when selecting which wheel nuts you want to use. Personally I changed to open type nuts. I bought the studs from USA for ~$230 inc. freight.
Installation is fairly straight forward, I needed to tweak the front disk stone shield slightly to get the stud in and on the rear you'll need to pull the disc off and disassembly the handbrake. There is a technique to get the rear studs in which I can go into more detail if you like. lets just say if the stud was 1mm longer they wouldn't fit.
It would be possible to cut the studs down but requires a lot of effort, and you need to make sure it is done properly otherwise it may weaken the stud.

Post close up pics of the remaining stud in the nut. Failure side up. Easy to tell what happened.

So you found all six nuts attached to the end of the studs in the wheel?

Just went through my pictures and I didn't take one of the studs all 6 nuts attached to the studs in the cover of the wheel when I lifted it up .

I agree. The aftermarket wheels or something related are likely the cause.
