          I have just bought a 2005 T/D auto with 29500kms on clock, first full tank of fuel with 300kms around town and the rest to Albany and back I got 12l/100km. It has Desert Duelers 275/65's fitted which I don't know if they are taller than standard to effect speedo accuracy I will have to check. I am keen find out about any mods for more power and economy.

            Not sure if this thread is still alive and twitching so I'll post the question and see what happens... :|
            I'm looking at getting a whole new exhaust for my 2004 3.0 Diesel 120 Prado. I went into the local exhaust shop here and the guy gave me a quote for a 2.75 inch Mercury exhaust system. $800 fitted. I don't know why he went for that one but he said they were pretty good for the money. I see there is a lot of info on this site about the Beaudesert setup, but is Mercury any good?
            Thanks,

              I don't know anything about the Mercury, but I've heard some good reports on the Taipan Vortex - but more expensive than what you have been quoted.

                Quote: COMBINED FUEL CONSUMPTION .............. 10.5 litres / 100 klms.
                or 57 litres / 600 klms

                cheers
                Les

                Unquote.

                Hey Les, check your calcs. Should be 9.5 Litres (if it is 57 l/600km).

                Mine: 10.5 city driving, 12.0L towing on a freeway (435 Hornet) and 9-9.5L on a freeway without towing (cruise/aircon on).

                    My Economy figures (1st Tank)

                    1st tank ( till green 90L light came on) ...975Km's

                    Filled up when 2nd tank hit 1/4 .... 152Litre / 1400 Km's
                    Makes consumption around 11L/100Km on new motor (400K's highway)

                    Alarming how fast the 2nd tank empties....makes each 1/4 tank on 2nd tank about 15 litres... (15+15+15+30Litres roughly (including reserve))

                    Car is absolutely stock standard.. so adjust the distance travelled down by ~0.6% (account for inaccurate odo) makes it mid 11L/100Km

                    Not bad really for a brand new engine, mostly city driving ..

                      I have a april 2007 VX, My wife and i are sure something has changed when it comes to how much fuel shows what level on the gauge.
                      We have run 5 or 6 lots of 180L through the prado in the last 12 months and thought the gauge was pritty linear. But we are now seeing numbers like Blackbird's ( no the tank is not dinted now :-).

                      The weekend before last we put 30L in and it showed 1/2 on the last 90 tank when the light first came on. This weekend 100L after the low fuel light had been on for 40 km ( its a long way between BP stations when cutting wood in the bush here) showed 3/4 of the whole gauge , but after 10 minutes dropped to 1/2 of a whole gauge.

                      We get between 10.2 and 10.8 on the SGII averaged over a month.

                        Gday All

                        have just finished first tank on 08 D4D - very conservative driving

                        Rough figures (am yet to get exact speedo error) put economy around the 11.5 L/100km - Am a little disappointed but I do run 265/70 Cooper STs which i am presuming makes a big difference - out of curiousity at 100 km/h I am doing about 2100 revs - how does that compare to those with standard size tyres?

                        At first thought I had the quick reaction of "Im selling the STs and putting standard tyres back on" but having read through other PP reports - maybe a litte hasty!

                        Definately agree with the comments about the second tank going a lot quicker - At one stage I wanted to glue the little needle on so it stopped dropping so fast! :evil: - Is a lot more painful on a lease car knowing you have to keep driving it to get the kms up!

                        Will be keen to see what the second tank does.

                            yetiboy - what % error for your speedo do u work on? - I reckon about 4% is about right going by a couple of GPS's I have tested with.

                            I found that when I am doing 110 by speedo - the GPS says Im doing about 106 - I thought it was meant to be the other way round?? how does that compare with you?

                              First of all , you will get a full 1 to 2 l/100km back by the time the motor is run in at 12,000 Km or so.

                              Now for the tyres:

                              --cooper tyre-------------------
                              Height of tyre wall = 265 * .7 = 185.5mm
                              1/2 of a 17" Rim = 8.5" = 216mm
                              Wheel radius = 216 + 185.5 = 401mm
                              Circumference = 2 * 3.1415 * R
                              = 2522mm per tyre rev.
                              = 396 revs per Km

                              -----------standard tyre---------------
                              Height of tyre wall = 265 * .65 = 172.3mm
                              1/2 of a 17" Rim = 8.5" = 216mm
                              Wheel radius = 216 + 172.3 = 388mm
                              Circumference = 2 * 3.1415 * R
                              = 2440mm per tyre rev.
                              = 409 revs per Km

                              401/388 = 103.4 ( the cooper is in theory 3.4% taller)

                              take 3.4% off of your 11.6 and 10.8 => 11.2 and 10.4.

                              now lets look at the revs at 100km/h
                              Assume 3.909 diffs and .799:1 top gear.

                              2100rpm / .799 = 2628 tailshaft RPM
                              2628 / 3.909 = 672 axle RPM = 40320 RPHour

                              coopers speed = 40320 / 396 = 101.8 Km/h

                              std tyre = 40320 / 409 = 98.6 Km/h

                              Its all good old year 9 maths.
