Re: CHK CHK Sounds in the engine

I am glad I found this thread. I bought my 2007 VX a few months ago and I thought I had a bad engine. As long as this does not impact the reliability fo the engine in the long run, I will not worry about it. It is strange but I experience the same type of sound (only much higher when cold) in my 2002 RAV4, go figure.

Same problem in my 98 V6.

Dealer thought it was coming from gearbox. They rebuilt the box at 65,000km under warranty. Got the car back and guess what, yep, ticking noise still there. It's coming from the exhaust somewhere, only faintly audible. Still going at 185,000km.

Re: CHK CHK Sounds in the engine

Hi Prado experts, I drive a 2003 prado 2.7 petrol and noticed CHK noice only while driving (not at idle) at regular intervals. Its similar to the noice of air from big trucks but not that loud. Mechanic opined that could be from a/c compressor, but noticed even without a/c on!

Re: CHK CHK Sounds in the engine

Apparently this sound is not caused by valves or injectors but the PWM vacuum switching valve when the engine is at idle. The valve resonates off the intake manifold causing the noise to be amplified.

The noise does not indicate any mechanical problems however I include a link below which offers a fix for the problem on the FJ Cruiser which shares the same Mill at the petrol Prado.

Not to re-ignite an old post as such but I'm not sure the issue I'm having is completely unrelated. Seems like most people here are in agreeance that this constant ticking or clicking noise is coming from the archaic exhaust manifold and that by adding pacemakers extractors or the sorts will fix the issue.

In my case I notice a definite ticking whilst accelerating and also if I pop the bonnet whilst stopped (not whilst driving :P), there is a much lighter ticking. The question I want to know is, why if when i'm accelerating and the car is in gear is the ticking there, but if I drive and chuck the car in neutral whilst at speed and then give it some gas, the constant ticking isn't there??

Does anyone else have this phenomonen?? I would have thought if it was exhaust manifold related it would do it all the time, not just when the car was in gear...

I am planning on getting some extractors fitted shortly some time may tell but does anyone else have this expereience or can someone who notices the ticking in theirs try the cracking into neutral whilst driving stunt?

Just interested on any thoughts as to how that would be possible :O

                    Cheers guys

                    Wes

Sorry to raise an old thread from the dead but does anyone have any more info on this noise? I think it's the noise I'm getting in the thread: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...nsmission-area
I had the car today (it's normally the wife's daily driver) and it's definitely coming from up higher. The odd thing is I have extractors and can still hear it and it's driving me crazy.
I took it back to the exhaust shop that did my 2 cat's today and he found a small leak in the gasket between the extractors and cat. He'll fix it tomorrow. He also mentioned it might be the tappets. I booked it in for a 200K service on Saturday.

Had it fixed today, it was a leaking gasket between the extractors and cat.

My turn to drag up an old thread...

My 05 has always had what i believe to be the manifold tick... windows up fixed it. I can usually here this from the drivers side..

recently it's developed another concerning manifold/tappet/valve noise... under load at around 1800-2400 rpm it's got what i think may be tappet or valve noise, this time from the passenger side and I can hear it through the firewall.. It doesnt do it unless driving under load, free revving a stationary car results in nothing...

anyone got any ideas how to identify ?

If it is tappets are they easily adjusted.

anyone know a good mechanic in Adelaide who knows the Grj motors?

                        cheers
