  • suspension measurements

    Hi All.
PCM_120 is running a thread about front suspension mods. And I touched on this while in his thread.

I want to ask for everybody to measure their front suspension and post it here.
I had my front springs sag on me so I thought it would be good to have a standard and modified measurement guide for people to check.
Obviously it depends on if you have standard suspension or a lift and whether you have a steel bar, ally bar, dual batteries, winch or 13 spotlights etc

My suspension fitter uses a measurement standard of taking dimensions from the centre of the hub to the bottom of the guard in a vertical line with the car on flat level ground.
I think this is for all the car types they do.
From 4X4 to lowered commodores. Some with 4" between the top of the tyre and some with the top of the rim up under the guard.
Some with low profile rubber on 20" rims to massive muddies on 15" rims.
It all should be standard if measured from the centre of the hub, vertically to the bottom of the guard.

So can I ask you to get out the tape measure and post your results?

    Standard, mm
 standard with accessories. and what they are. (e.g bar only) mm
 lift in inches but no accessories. mm
 Lift with accessories and what they are.(e.g bar, dual batteries and winch) mm

For starters mine is as follows. (you can cut and paste this if you want)

2" lift, Lovell's springs, bilstein struts
 When suspension fitted (front) 560mm from hub centre measured vertically to bottom of guard. (from their records)
 Accessories fitted at the time:(steel ARB bar, Dual batteries)

 Suspension front: 1 year later, 505/510mm to bottom of guard.
 Accessories fitted now: (steel ARB bar, 3 spotlights, dual batteries, winch(12000lbs))

If you measure from the top of the rim to the bottom of the rim and half it you will notice that the centre is pretty well right in the middle of the Toyota emblem in the hub. Giving or taking 5mm here or there is fine.

And for all the guys who recently had or are going to get suspension lifts, this is probably a good thing to check and record for your own benefits.

I will keep a tally and edit it in to this first post, see below.

    Average front measurements

    standard= 525mmV6.
 standard with alloy bar= 510mm(with bash plate). 520mm (Alloy Bar only).
 standard ,alloy bar with the works=490-500 to 550mm
 standard ,steel bar with the works= 474mm to 480mm.
    30mm with xtra batt & alloy bar= 535mm. lovells/ bilstein
    2" standard
 2" with alloy bar= 560mm-575mm (ATS ridepro)
 2" alloy bar with the works= 565mm(OME)
 2" steel bar with the works=560mm (lovells), 564mm (OME), 570mm (TJM)

I can add more here as the need arises

    Average rear measurements

    standard= 525-535mm.530mm near full tanks. 550mm to 560 empty.545mm (1/2 tanks)
    standard with load 520mm.
    GRANDE= med/normal 540mm, high 590mm
    30mm 90L fuel= 580. lovells/ bilstein.
    2" unladen=590mm. .(ATS Bilstein)
    2" with load= 600mm. (Lovells) 614mm (OME with 25mm spacer). 565mm. OME(full fuel)
 2" airbag man airbags= 600-650mm with long travel shocks.
    3" unladen
    3" with load
 lifted with airbag= 615mm, 17PSI,80L fuel. (ATS Ridepro).

 Keep in mind people, this is just suspension component measurements. To gain more clearance larger tyres from standard is the go.

    Come on guys.
30 looks and no measurements yet.
its going to be a small data base.

Great idea for a thread Jeff,

This had crossed my mind recently and I measured a stock Prado in the carpark at work (the MPs didn't drag me away for snooping around  ). I concluded that I scored an extra 15 odd millimetres when my Old Man Emu springs were fitted.

I will measure up at work tomorrow, no use doing it tonight in my steep driveway.

      Drew.

        Re: suspension measurements

Sadly, suspension is still stock standard, though I am sure this thread will convince me what I am going to do with my tax return.

        Standard, 500mm
 accessories include Toyota Soveriegn alloy bar, Cibie Oscars, Snorkel, Dual Battery system with 100ah battery.
 lift in inches but no accessories - N/A
 Lift with accessories and what they are - N/A

Won't tyres also impact measurements. :?: I have Yokohama Geolander HTS in std 265/65 x 17 with only 6,000 kms on them. (They were on the car when I got it - going cheap if anybody is after a set of Highway tyres. PM me if you are interested)

Any reason we are not measuring rear as well. :?: For what its worth, and to give me a comparative for when I get the suspension done, it is 525mm on drivers side and 535mm on passenger side . . . .what the?

Bugger... It looks like my rig started life a little low.

 Standard: 494mm, As measured by ARB before install (not sure if this included the accessories).

 First Fitted: 564mm, As measured by ARB after installing OME 885 coils and N140S shocks (not sure if this included the accessories).

 Current: 564mm, With coils and shocks as above and 6mm spacer between top of shock and mount (about 60,000Km).

 Accessories: ARB Steel bar, Warn XP9500, 2x IPF 900XS lights and snorkel.

Humm, I think I'm going to have to find some more...

 Rear: 614mm with OME 895 coils, N141 shocks & custom 25mm spacers (with fridge and ~80L of fuel on board)

Matt, wow. It looks like the 55mm Ridepro’s actually gave you more like 70 to 80mm of lift. When you have some time and grubby clothes on, could you please do me a favour and measure from the top of the shock mount (where the three nuts are) to the centre of the bolt at the bottom of the shock.

          Cheers,

          Paul.

            Thanks Guys.

Byrnsie, No, tyres dont impact the measurement if taken this way.
The mechanical components are the same irrespective of tyres.
If we measured from the ground up then yes.

            Jeff.

Paul - bear in mind the Bilstein shocks are adjustable (the spring carrier can be moved up and down the tube), so every installation will be slightly different and Matt's lift height isn't a direct result of the springs.

(Hope I've got the right handle on this - I'm happy to be corrected! ops: )

I didn't mention the polyairs - I was simply pointing out that the Bilstein struts are adjustable so one cannot assume the resultant lift is a directly caused by the type of spring.

                  My front measurement is 565mm.

This is with the Sovereign Alloy bar, winch cradle, winch, dual batteries.

Suspension is Bilstein shock/strut and Old Man Emu springs (supposed to give 50mm lift).

                    Matt,
From the photo with the horse float attached it looks as if you may have to invest in a lower tow bar tongue. No offense meant   (Just joking)

The guys at work and I were saying the same thing. I wonder how stable it is with the nose high like that? Trailers (particularly dual axle) usually get a bit of a sway up when they are nose high.
