  • Brakes 'grabbing'

The car has done about 8000km so far, so good.

I have been noticing that nearly everytime i bring the car to a complete stop - and when i release the brakes to move forward, i notice what feels like a grabbing sensation coming from (maybe?) a rear brake. It does not release at the same time as the other brakes and by it doing this, it sends a shudder thru the car and then releases.

All good until the next time i bring the car to a complete stop. No difference on hills or flats, its feels like it is grabbing and then shudders when the brake is released to move forward again.

Kinda disturbing after the age of the car. Been reading up on the hand brake adjustment (mine is getting close to full travel) and when parked on the drive way and release the handbrake - there is a 'ping' noise that is heard from the rear of the car - looks like time for the spanner monkeys to get underneath and do some adjustments...

Looking forward to your thoughts and experiences ....

    orangepeel,
There has been a lot of postings on this subject under Drive Train.

    www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=106&start=0

As yet Toyota have not got a lasting cure for the problem

From what I can make out it only happens on the Auto models, I tend to think it is transmission wrap-up from the limited slip unit in the Torsen centre transfer unit?? :? (That's my guess)
Just out of interest I have never noticed it when the road is wet or you are on a loose surface?

Toyota seem to think it is from the tailshaft :?

    Cheers,

Just thought I'd bring up this topic again. I have done 9300kms in my auto VX D4D. The brakes are constantly "grabbing" every time I stop at traffic lights etc.
Has anyone worked out what the cause is yet? Assuming it is a common problem.
I plan to get it checked out at the 10,000km service along with getting the handbrake adjusted.

I have mentioned this "characteristic" at every service to 50k and have been told there is nothing wrong with the brakes. At the last service I was given a wad of paper from Bridge Toyota in Darwin that did everything but explain why this "characteristic" in my truck is supposedly "normal"! I describe it as similar to a warped rotor without the rotor being warped if you get my drift. Only evident at lower pedal pressure when easing up to lights. This "characteristic" is not evident in Klugers, LC 100 and 200 Series I have driven recently. Any explanations out there?

I've got 600km on the clock. I thought this was normal as the car has done it since new.

Our Nissan Patrol 3.0L does the same... thought it was more to do with the ABS system. Hasn't affected braking and doesn't seem to be a problem.

I purchased a 2004 Prado V6 5sp Auto and have the same "Grabbing" of the brakes while coast braking and hard braking towards a traffic light. Had the rotors skimmed, but still the same. Only happens when the brakes are at temperature. The brake pedal also feels very LONG and spunghy. I find it very irritating...

I read through the threads and see it's a common issue and really nothing I can do to fix it?

don't tell me that - as we speak my Prado is in getting the brakes skimmed because it is driving me up the wall, all that 'grabbing' - anyone would think i'm in a mosh pit!

alrighty - got the Prado back after a major service yesterday - had all 4 rotors skimmed (cost was $130) and problem is solved!

both rear brakes were quite bad apparently, thus requiring two skims. didn't need to replace the pads so yeah, all in all, very happy.

i can only think for you want_a_prado that maybe they only did the front rotors of yours. dunno.

will be interested to see how long this lasts and when a brake replacement is required I would consider a similar set up to what assassin off road is offering the the vendors section.

I removed my front rotors and had them machined. Then fitted new pads, genuine toyota ( i am a believer that should you have discs machined you should fit new pads or should you require new pads, have discs machined and then very important to 'bed' in properly)
I then 'bedded' the brakes in properly and they no longer grab .... not sure the reasons why they were grabbing - perhaps the previous owner didn't bed the brakes in properly from new?? only a stab in the dark.
Has been 2000km and they are still good. Also solved the driveline issue, i grease the tailshaft every 5000km myself, just 3 pumps with the grease gun.
                            cheers, Rod
