    D4D is Impressive

    Well !!

Let me say this Whisper has now turned into a ROAR ,,, SHE RUNNING !!

Finally after 3 Months since she blew the previous motor due to the idler wheel breaking ( design fault ) I have finally completed my task of shopping , installing and connecting a D4D 2007 model with 10,000ks on the clock.

I should say It only took me 4 weeks in my spare time to install Generally speaking could do the whole job in a week !!! especially if you don't have a 4 month old Baby !!

Well Drove her around the block 3 times , 1st time had a few squeaks noise, had to tighten the Bonnet a bit lol and 2nd time felt great 3 rd time round the block decide to open throttle a bit ....WWWhhHHHOOOOAAAAAAA slow down babe !! I gotta admit the new Engine is sooo Impressive compare to my old 1KZ-TE which only produce approx 85 Kws the new engine acceleration was sensational , This may be my mind playing me but I reckon the engine is quieter and Smoother it also has a better torque range right across the rev range unlike my previous engine. in other words very impressive

OK let me pull my head together ... The new D4D engine is a class above from most other diesel engine I have driven and on the techinal side of it I Must say Congratulation to Toyota for making some Very clever tweaks to the engine Immobilizer unit compare to the 90 series , Wont go into details but its almost Impossible to by pass the immobilizer Hence the reason for the teething issues i had when starting the motor
will keep posted i,m more interested in the ability on the track as well sand driving and highway speed will keep you posted !!

    cheers pradofreak

        Gearbox/tranfer case

Hi was just wondering how you went with all the 4wd system eg transfer case.gearbox tailshafts etc, was there any major modifications to change over to suit ?? Did you install motor and gearbox/transfer case complete or did you adapt the d4d to your existing running gear ?? Steve

              Ditto plus.....

Something I haven't yet been able to find an answer too, but you may have come across it in your travels with this mod.

On the Auto & maybe on the manual gearbox there is a switch to tell the ECU that the gearbox is in first gear. What does the ECU do with this information?

Cheers & congratulations on the upgrade!

                Stormy,

There is a switch for first gear that de-rates the engine to save the clutch on a manual vehicle. I would reckon it just cuts the fuel rate back a bit to cut down on driveline stress by eager clutch riders .

Looking in the manual this would be easily overriden, I will check it out on the weekend.

                Congrats on the install Pradofreak

Many thanks for all the compilments !!

well to answer some members questions regarding gearbox and engine The D4D engine block is exactly the same generally speaking just the heads and fuels pump and common rail is different as well add another 300 sensors added compare to the old engine , its almost an Boeing 747 specification, the gearbox from the 90 series bolted straight on to the D4D and regarding the 1st gear function !! I didn't connect the wire for the first gear activation its thinks its in 2nd or onwards and no difference whatsoever when driving in fact I think its takes off better , I didn't have to change the drive shafts or anything like wise and currently do have the 6 speed manual gearbox I,m thinking about selling this as i need the $$$$ to keep my wife happy ( I think she wants to buy a pram ) ops:  ops:
If i did install the gearbox i would have to add the 120 series shafts as they are slightly shorter on the main long shaft that goes to rear diff , The rest is still the same ( 6 speed gearbox is 2 inches longer than 90 series 5 speed gearbox )

Generally speaking the hardest thing was comparing the wiring diagram of the 90 series and 120 series then matching them, apart from this the rest is easy !!

Seriously I,m having too much fun. I started thinking the speedo must be incorrect as the speedo needle flys up faster than the rev meter generally speaking so out comes my trustworthy GPS and the speed between the GPS and Speedo is spot on !!! I wonder if they should have left the 5 speed gearbox on ? and another thing my prado is 300kgs lighter than the 120 series as well the rear seats removed

more to come . Planning on going to the blue mtns tommorrow so highway driving is on the agenda stay tuned

Thanks, I noticed the switch on my Auto too! It may assist take off in low range 1st if I bypass it as it seems a little sluggish sometimes.....

                              G,day Everyone !!

Well i know its been a few months since i left some gossip on here but hey I Thought I should let you know i,m still having fun !! TOO MUCH FUN !!

Not sure why but my fuel consumption is brilliant with the five speed gearbox matched to the D4D i,m averaging 9.4 litres per hundred ks (city) and to my surprise on the Highway its closer to 9.2 / 100ks !! Generally speaking no real difference between highway and city driving !! compare to my old donkl which did average around 12.8 /100ks and i hear this is what the 120 D4D with 6 speed gearbox are averaging ?? so i,m not sure what the real benefit of the sixth gear ? and for the record the 5 speed outclass the 6 speed in acceleration ( I was naughty some time ago as listed elswhere on this thread) but with top speed well I got to 140 ks on a private property before backing off i mean i was doing this on a bushtrack
( insane) with more revs to play with !! I think it could have hit at least 180 but i,m not game enough to know or find out !!

recently I headed out in the bush and now enjoying the fact that i can literally stay in high range 1st up steep hills as well rocket up if i wanted to, this is one area that really annoyed me with the 1kzte I mean you literally had to stop and shift into low for most minor slopes due to lack of torque down low ! recently I visit Sunny corner in NSW (we got lost seriously lost I mean we a bunch of 6 4wd nuts all have GPS with oz explorer and due to heavy rain and poor visibility as well the shocking GPS reception we had no idea where we were !!) buts its fun getting LOST !!

the prado powered along with ease in all type of slippery terrain as well the steep rock climbs it literally just bounce s up which was impressive even had to tow my mate junk 4.2 turbo patrol up some tracks ( ok ok he has road tyres with bugger all grips) but the engine performs beauteously

and regarding about some question back about the 6 speed gearbox has a wiring sensor to the ecu , as I was still Using the 5 speed Gerabox I ended up rewiring this feature to the foot brake in other words when i apply my footbrake the ecu or D4D thinks i,m in 1st gear, Generally speaking this features is used for when the engine cold or just started it will climb higher than normal idleing rev but when you put the clutch into 1st it actuallys lower the revs etc whell same theory .... but in my case using foot brake !! does the trick !

Well I hope to see someone else take on this great conversion and join the special prado Club !

keep the shiny side up !!
