Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

On our recent trip with 5 people in the car and the camper trailer weighing around 800kgs, I averaged 17.6L/100k that was with the ac on also. Ours is a 4 speed auto, its worth noting though that fuel economy will increase quite significantly when doing 110 instead of a 100.

I also used the cruise control when possible and found that at 100 I had to take over in hilly areas, as it had a tendancy to drop gears trying to not wash off a couple of ks. By letting it drop 5 or so ks up the larger hills off cruise control it cruised up nicely in top gear.

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

What are you guys complaining about?

My 90 series V6 petrol with 5 speed made 4 - 4.5km/litre pulling Jayco Swan Outback 16,000km Kalgoorlie - Cape York via Great Central Road and then around east coast all the way to Adelaide before returning home. $4,500 in petrol and I only budgeted for $3500.

Might have had something to do with sitting on 110km/hr on the blacktop, except for NT where I did 120. Dirt roads were travelled at a more sedate 70 - 80.

Hopefully my new 120 t/d GXL auto will manage beter economy with my current (smaller and lighter) offroad camper trailer. Oh, and the kids have been banned forever from going camping with us!

22L/100ks or thereabouts really isnt that bad when you look at the fact you were doing up to 120ks with a loaded trailer that would weigh in with water etc at about 1600-1800kgs. Also given that it was the 3.4 which unless you modded the exhaust and air intake is known for poorer performance and higher fuel consumption I would say those figures are not too bad. We are in the process of buying a Swan and if fully loaded up the Prado does it at 20s or under I will be satisfied. 8)

Im a pedantic buggar when it comes to fuel consumption technical stuff and I can give you a few ideas. I do all my calculations to 2 decimal points in the Excel spreadsheet. Before I go any further I must add that Im a reasonably light pedal motorist but I certainly dont go overboard. If you have an instantanous fuel consumption facility watch it closely as you acellerate etc. Quite amazing. When towing I always use 4th. And always cruise control unless in hills. In top gear sometimes you uses more acellerator than necessary to maintain speed. And this can decimate your fuelconsumption. My van is a tandem Jayco at 2100KG. The Prado will change gears continuously If placed in top (towing) unless the road is perfectly flat and no headwind(Which doesnt appear to happen much). The Prado gives 11.9L/100ks on trips with no van and 20l/100 with. About 23mpg and 14mpg respectively. As an interesting comparison my previous vehicle was a VT commodore 1999 model with 217,000 ks on the clock 4 speed auto and its figures were not towing 8.5L/100 and towing 17.5L/100 That is 33mpg and 17.5mpg respectively. I always towed the VT in 3rd. Ive found it very difficult trying to do accurate fuel consumption figures. There is a lot of variation due to road conditions , wind etc. Ive done a lot of travelling and havnt found a dead level road over a long distance yet. Generally roads are undulating. However Ive not travelled the nullabor yet.
Hope you figure out your problem

To add to my last post I always tow at 95Kph with the van and 100/105 without.

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

my latest was 719km (450 towing wind-up camper, rest around town) for 16.7L/100k

Travelled at same speeds as usual (100-110 when towing) but camper was a little lighter than usual, we didn't take 2x20L jerries of water, an extra Prado spare wheel and a little bit less food and clothes. Would actually do a bit better if I stuck to no more than 100 as the scangauge shows that consumption goes up significantly around there (that happens when not towing too)

                  Nige.

                    Well well well
just arrived in Port Augusta, towing the van fully loaded, roof rack with camping gear and extra spare wheel on top and using air cond occasionally, just had the Prado serviced, had the gas checked out and my fuel consumption is woeful to say the least, I really find it hard to believe some of the results you guys are getting towing, I have kept to a max speed of 95 kph and usually travel at 85 to 90 kph and I am still using 63 litres of gas and approx 57 litres of petrol to travel only 230 k's at best !!! wost was 205 k and used 62 litres, this is in 4th gear and very little use of cruise control.

is that just the 57L of petrol to cover 230K's or both the petrol and gas?

either way, you must have a leak somewhere!

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

                        HI
in Coober Pedy at present and doing the sums, at best I have achieved 25 litres per 100 and worst 30 litres per 100, it makes no difference on Petrol or gas, there is no leak that I can see, 230 is the figure I get on a tank of gas, I am genuinely driving at 80 to 90 kph in 4th and using cruise control on flat roads, have tried Drive occasionally but as others have said its constantly hunting for a better gear, the roof rack is loaded with camping gear and extra spare, the back of the car is full and I reckon the van is around 2 tons, most of the roads are flat here.
The car has been serviced, new plugs clean air filter and Toyota have checked the computer and the gas installer has checked out the system, all OK.
I am at a loss, at 90 cents per litre for gas and 140 for petrol (diesel 149) this trip around Aussie is costing a small fortune
Any advice on what can be wrong will be greatly appreciated
                        cheers

                          Thanks for that,
it seems to me that you are right, a brick shithouse descibes it well! I'm in Alice right now and travelling with just the roof rack loaded, the extra spare is in the back, and there is still a fair bit of stuff there too, and low and behold the car is getting worse on Petrol or gas, no caravan this time and all I got was 271k's on 63 litres of gas, Petrol is just a bit better. Gas is $0.86 and petrol $1.36, been as high as $1.16 for gas and $1.89 unleaded, still, going to Toyota and see if there is a problem somewhere
                          cheers Stevo

Thanks again for your responses. using injector cleaner all the time, just Spoke to Alice Springs Toyota and they suggest injectors need to be re set and cleaned so will wait till I get to Darwin for that
As for Fun, we are having a wonderful time, Uluru, Kings Canyon, West Mc Donnell ranges and today the East Mc Donnells, then on to all the places in between here and Darwin, after this I'll be buying a Turbo Diesel, talking to all of the fellow caravanners and thay are using between 15 to 20 litres per 100 and pulling bigger vans!!!!
all the lpg and petrol towers are taking out a 2nd mortgage to pay for their trip!!
Enjoy life where ever you are
