Thanks again for your responses. using injector cleaner all the time, just Spoke to Alice Springs Toyota and they suggest injectors need to be re set and cleaned so will wait till I get to Darwin for that
    Hi Stevo
Ive just come back from5 weeks travelling to Broome last Monday, towing my new camper trailer with the bikes and was wondering if having the injectors reset fixed your problem with economy.
I didnt have the best conditions for travelling with head winds, just managing to get into Broome just before the road was closed because of Cyclone Laurance but I appear to have about the same economy as you.
The best I got was 25L/100k with the worst of just getting to Broome from Port Hedland 650K's on 180 L of fuel.
Even driving around without the trailer didnt seem to help. Just seemed to watch the gauge go down.
I intend this week to fill the tank and do a quick trip to Bunbury this weekend to see how it goes with no weight.
Only mods done is Bridgestone AT's and a Sovereign bullbar, both fitted just prior to going.
If you have had any luck I'd love to know before I go down the fustrating road of getting Toyota to look at it.

    Regards
    Wayne

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

      Hi Wayne
hope you enjoyed your time in Broome...apart from the fuel economy!!!
Unfortunately I can't help you at all with an answer..I am still waiting for my fuel Angel to give me an answer to my fuel woes..she hasn't turned up yet.
The only solution..bite the bullet and get a diesel...keep telling myself that but the Prado sits in the driveway and I have not got the heart to get rid of her..she still looks as good as the day I got her...so she'll be here for a while yet..
But if we listen to some of our friends on Pradopoint who have outstanding fuel economy there may be hope for us yet..not holding my breath though!
      take care

        Mate
        I have an 06 - 50k's V6 towing 2.5ton (okay slightly heavier!) boat..
4th is definately the trick -i found she doesnt hunt for gears constantly if in 4th - i get 22ish lp/100km at around 90kmh. - take it to 100-105 and this will go to 30lph. Also make sure your tyres at right pressure- you would be surprised at how important this is for economy and more importantly your tyres
I used to work for Pirelli in the 90's and this (below) is what was drummed into our heads from the guys from BFG in the USA (Pirelli owned BFG back then)
Take the car manufacturers recommended tyre pressure (trust me they put a lot of research into this)
        for each of the following-
constant high speed travel (80-90kmh+ over 4hours) add 4psi
        extra load -add 4psi
extra load + high speed travel - add 4 psi
so high speed travel with load i add extra 12psi.....
No doubt other people have their own methods - but this works for me :-)

        cheers
        Clint

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

          Hi
I got my 2004 GXL V6 in Oct last year with 98000km on the clock. I've since then added 9000 of which 7000 was a trip to SA covering Googs track (about 200 sand dunes) Coffin Bay NP (beach driving) Port Lincoln NP (more beach driving) Gawler ranges and Flinders ranges. We had the camper behind us for the full 7000km and a solar panel on roof. The other 2000km was Sydney traffic. My total consumption since Oct is 19.9l/100km. Guess I should not complain.

            Hi all
I might be a bit late looking at the post. I have just returned from a trip through Queensland, NT, WESTAUSSI, SA, VIC and back to NSW.
We towed a 18 ft 6 pop top van. The head winds were very strong all the way down the West coast and across the Nulabough ,where the worst result was 27 lt / 100 ks in saying that for about 25000 ks it avaredge 18.3 ltr / 100 ks

                Hi Guys
Im a newbie here so my first attempt at a post. Not sure if this is relevant to anyone but I have a 2005 V6 GXL Auto 79k and tow an Avan Aliner 2B which weighs just on a ton loaded. Also have a Waeco CF35 , a wheel chair, a bike and all sorts of stuff in the back of the Prado so an extra few hundred kilos when travelling. Just did a trip from Gold Coast to Yeppoon, and back via 1770 , Agnes Water (shocking road) and Bundaberg then to hervey Bay and back home. 70% towing 30% sightseeing. Total fuel 326 litres total klms 2128 and most into a strong headwind, Avg fuel consumption was 15.3 lt/100klms. I sat on 90-100 most of the time going up in overdrive unless hills , coming back in 5th with the cruise on. Very happy with those figures. Anyways,,,hope I havent bored you Cheers Artman....

740 towing car trailer + gtr + spared on the freeway

                  15.9 km/100 k's

                  aircon on

i have also noticed when my prado says 5km to empty it only takes 150 litres of fuel

                    well done another run

this time staying at the speed limit towing 2.3 tones and loaded with another 300 in parts

                    18.6litre per 100km

it certainly drinks if you try and stay at 110km/h on uphills

Re: Towing economy ? V6 Petrol 120 series

Two things I've noticed with my VX,

Regularly clean the MAF sensor in the air cleaner box (seems to make a significant difference) &
inflate the tyres to the tyre manufacturer spec's. (Car handles and rides better with improved fuel economy)

It might be also a good idea to have the exhaust checked for blockages, leaks, etc, particularly with the Cat Convertor.

I had a Falcon that I always got poor fuel economy from, ended up looking at the Cat Convertor and changing it as it was apparently collapsed and everytime exhaust blew thru it, the interferance was too much causing fuel slurpage. Once changed, ended up being the most fuel efficient falcon I ever owned

                      Might be worth considering.

                      cheers
                      Terry

still much better than mine, although in saying that have just had the car serviced and was told MAF was very dirty so lets see what happens on next big run..

                            Hi Guys
Fuel economy has always been a pane to me, I hear what you are saying. I think it could be the diference in what type ofn gearbox the vehicle has ie auto 4 speed, auto 5 speed, manual 5 speed its just my 2 cents worth

Is there a thread on how to clean the MAF and what exactly it does. I could not find anything in here.

                                Hi One and all
have left Broome and on the road again, have just travelled 4400 k's and now in Perth, just done some figures and the Prado is using more fuel than ever before, roof rack full car has 2 passengers and a heap of stuff in the back and the Jayco van is still there, travelling most of the way with strong headwinds I was lucky to get 210 out or the gas( 64 litres) and petrol was about the same, in total I used $1400 worth of fuel and have now worked out with the price of fuel ranging from best 75 cents to worse $1.50 its costing me 32 cents to travel a kilometre, must admit now that I am in Perth gas is around 60 cents a litre...
Now the car has been serviced, Maf cleaned, clean air filter, Injector cleaner used often, tyre pressures at 38, max speed 95 but most of the time 85 kph and have tried to use Nano engine oil (made no difference at all) so with 64 litre of gas and approx 87 litres of petrol my range is still around 550 k's towing, even without the van its still using 18 to 20 litres per 100 and I am sensible with my driving habits, am seriously looking at trading in now for a diesel....
so as I have said before some of you guys are so lucky to get the consumption I have read about..
                                all for now
                                Stevo
