  • Hi Folks, I am brand new to this forum, however heard about this cracked dash thing from a mate only yesterday and was told to follow it up pronto!

I own a 9/07 built D4D GLX Prado with 78,000klms on the clock. I actually sold a new Discovery to buy this car from the original owner only three years ago, and i'm totally chuffed with the car. Having said that, I too noticed fine cracks around the binnacle about a year ago that have spread like spiders webs all over the place. It is always garaged and kept in VGC. Having owned another Toyota this was a strange thing, as these cars are normally perfect - in my experience.

Anyway, had the Wife take the car to Ryde Toyota today. A few chaps came out with long faces and a camera to inspect it. They said to the Wife that they would be in contact tonight, which I short-circuited by calling them at 4pm. Head of service said this; "we had to have a look at the car and ensure that serving was Ok, and we had a look at the Klms and the condition of the car (which was perfect). With this, we sent off some pictures to H/O and they have in this instance approved the installation of a new dash under warranty. Wait 4 weeks to get the part ......"

I worded her up on the issue of age. This car is in it's 10th year, and they have honoured the claim, HOWEVER.... Toyota never told me of this recall but instead I had to hear of it word of mouth from a mate, and then they appeared to be basing the decision on whether to replace (or not) on metrics such as service records, condition, klms etc.

I am very happy we have a new dash ordered and ready to be installed, but I am also a little concerned that my Toyota dealer (where I have the car serviced) failed to tell me about this warranty replacement item, and that infact I had to find out by sheer luck and coincidence.

    regards,

    Adam

I introduced myself and told them that my dash was sticky and cracking around the vents and I had heard that Toyota where doing a "Customer Support Program" in relation to this issue.
She asked what type of car I had (2007 GXL Prado). When I told her she said well that's lucky as they have been given a cut off period of 10 years. She asked me to bring my car in for some photos. I said I have some pre taken photos if that was OK? She was happy with that
Within 1 hour she rang me back and told me it had been approved and will be booked in for replacement. 4 weeks from Japan. She will call when it arrives. No mention of any cost to me.
Very happy with the service so far.
Sounds good to me. As long as you're under the 10 year period, they'll help you no problems.

My car has done over 250,000 and the only time it has been to the dealer was for towbar recall.
        never had them service it.

        • The dealers have been worded up to be very careful in their statements, they will insist it is not a "recall" but a customer satisfaction program which obviously limits their legal obligations. I found success is very dependent on the dealers attitude, my local dealer on the northern beaches where the car was bought new and serviced most of its life was absolutely appalling in their general attitude in the service department and interest towards this issue. Chatswood Toyota who seem to be more than 10x busier every time I've been there and still took care of the whole process with Toyo HO professionally. Its no wonder there's 2 lines of cars 20m long in the morning to be booked in at Chatswood they know how to do what it takes to look after customers. I'd happily make extra arrangements and take the time to drive from the beaches to Chatswood for service or parts based on their service. Worth a try if you're in this part of Sydney.

          • Hi All, I have a 07/2007 GLX prado and the dash looked like a road map and has been that way for approx 6 years after a trip through Alice Springs where the temp reached nearly 50 degrees. It has had a dash mat since day one and kept under cover when it could be. A few weeks ago I thought I'd try Darwins Toyota as I had heard about getting in before 10 years. The chap took a few photos and said he didn't want to get my hopes up. 4 days later he rang and said I had been accepted and the dash was ordered and be in Darwin in approx 4 weeks time. There will be no charge. He followed on to tell me there was another recall on my Prado which was to have the seals on the bottom of the injectors replaced. I told him I have already replaced them and take a photo of the oil pick up through the plug hole most oil changes. He was ok with that. I am pretty happy with Bridge Auto Toyota after this. Hope fitting and after goes just as well. Hope this helps someone. Just keep trying. Cheers Bill.

                  • Took my 04 model down to local dealer yesterday and was told because it was past 10 year period there is nothing they could do. New dash $1100 plus $280 install. As others have said it's a bit crap when it's always been garaged and looked after, just taken longer to show the issue.

                    • Hi,
Sorry, new to posting, generally just a lurker apparently ! Has anyone in Perth had any success in getting their dash pad replaced on 2004 vehicles recently. My vehicle has done 285K garaged most of its life but started to crack back in 2014. Back then tried with Toyota and got knocked back as not within 3yr warranty period. Thought it was pointless to keep trying but now went to trade in and appraiser has knocked $2500 off trade in to replace dash !! If thats the case i want to try and get it replaced as it was at the same Toyota dealer that knocked me back in 2014. When did this 10yr rule come in and did it cover the initial early 120 series Prado's ?

                        Roughly Dec 2015 - Jan 2016
A few snuck in early on that were outside the 10 year period. But hardly hear of anyone lucky enough to get it done for free more recently.

                        • Took mine in this morning to the Dealer for inspection and photos, as a bonus they also pulled out injectors to replace seats as the car hadent been in for them under recall, but I do know previous owner paid to have them replaced.

Injectors and seats looked good according to mechanic, and also replaced seats. Dash has been OKed for replacement. New Dash has been ordered from the east and its booked in to get it replaced in 2 weeks.

Mine was 2 weeks from the 10 year cut off if that helps anyone.

I think it goes from original delivery date to customer. I was told as long as OKed for replacement before the 10 year cut off, it can be replaced after.

                          • New dash went in today, very happy with the new looking interior.

No issues, walked in, dropped off, giving a loan car for the day and pick up at 5 with no cost.

Only small issue was they scratched my leather wheel a little I presume trying to get it out, but told the service team about it and they will have a chat to the boss.
