    Re: Cracked dashboard

I lived in Alice Springs for 10 years and never had a problem with a cracked dashboard on my cars. I always used an internal windscreen sunshield (one of those expandable ones) and, if the car was to be left in extreme heat areas for a while, always left at least one window (normally two) down by about 1cm for the hot air to escape. It is amazing how this can reduce the internal temperate and stop your car from becoming a pressure cooker.

      Re: Cracked dashboard

nt - ours is parked in a garage and otherwise we use one of those reflector thingy sunshades as well. It does (or did), however, have a light film of dust.

I think ZAPPER might be onto something. Most of our driving is on dusty unsealed roads. You can imagine how hard it is to keep the dust down. The Prado does a pretty good job of keeping it out but the dust still makes it way into everything. I reckon a dashmat is a dead set must. I should have bought one straight up. kicking myself now.

Any solutions on how to fix it? ZAPPER, Maybe you could ask your friend in the auto repair world.

        Re: Cracked dashboard

I have the same problem 04 GXL three inch crack on top of the speedo pod, right hand side, running toward the centre of the pod. I only noticed it this week.

I bought the car from a Sydney Mazda dealer in may 08 - would this be covered under warranty with them?

        Cheers,

 Looks like dashmats are worthwhile and regularly wiping down any dust from the plastic is also a must. :!: :!: :?

You'd think it would be... mind you they'll most likely try and get out of it  ... give them a call. Being a car yard they should know someone that can plastic weld it up.

Dust which builds up on the dash absorbs the moisture out
It's actually oil, the plastics/vinyls used in the automotive industry are all petrochemical based... The heat brings the oil to the surface and the dust sucks it up.

I have a microfibre dusting mitt for the dash/console I keep in the car. I sometimes use it to remove the dust from the dash/console whilst waiting at the lights

                  Re: Cracked dashboard

I have a dash mat. Some people don't like the look of them, I don't mind it.

Stops glare and I guess offers some protection against cracking. I like to think it helps the aircon out a bit too when the dash doesn't get to a million degrees......

I was using Armorall but found in the heat it was leaving a film on the inside of the windscreen.

                    Re: Cracked dashboard

After years of sun-faded and cracked dashboards I'm now religiously putting up a sunshade almost every time I park the car, even in winter. It's a quick job and I think it can only help the longevity of the dashboard. Plus it keeps the cab temps down by a fair whack in summer. Although, after reading this I think I'm going to wipe the dash down a little more.....

Sure the car wasnt bought of a bitter marriage split couple and the wifey took to the Prado with a stanley knife hahaa
                        * possible front end collision from previous owner before purchasing, now dash is revealing stress it went under ?
                        * possibly tooooo much armourall in its earlier life
                        * Dash mats are great as you can chuck crap up there in a hurry and they "protect" against scratches and dust, great invention. Got mine for $45 from Supercheap just after I bought it.

I have just had the same problem cracking around the instrument panel on the dash lip.Heat seems to be the culprit I have owned it since new late 2003 and to my horror it cracked over the christmas holiday break whilst parked on the beach with windows down and sunshade.Has anyone contacted Toyota and what was there response??? IHave used Armour Oil since new as I have with all my other Toyota's.

                              Good GOLLY miss molly,

No front enders in my Prado and the missus drives it the most so i doubt she took to it with a Stanley knife. I really do think it is the dust and heat.

NOW how do i fix the bloody thing. It's like buying the "Mona Lisa" and discovering she has a pimple.

Yes !!!! I noticed the dashboard on my 2003 (120) was cracked just this week i went to a Dashboard repairer but he didn't want to touch it but he did advise me to get Loctite 406 and very carefully put small amounts in the crack and hold for 20 seconds at various spots along the length of the crack which I did and it looked good but next day other areas were cracking so I bought a dash mat it dosen't fix the problem but now I can't see it,by the way my Prado has spent a lot of it's life garaged day & night. Not Happy
