    Re: Cracked dashboard

Wow..didnt follow up this topic quite some time now. Didnt realise there's more and more owners with the same cracked dash as mine..

Bad news guys..the vinyl repair kit doesnt work as it just flakes off the dash after some time.
As of now i have around 10+ cracks around my dash..usually starting from the top of the speedo housing, aircon vents, centre console...its getting really annoying.

And also dont think dashmats will prevent this..i have a dashmat on and still it creeps up at new areas around the dash.
So i guess.. we know the culprit. Heat.

What i can only do now is put some sort of epoxy (2 ton glue) into those cracks in hopes of prevent my dash falling apart.
 Any body else can post some pics of their cracks..(dont think silly now! ) let's compare.

      Re: Cracked dashboard

There are businesses out there that repair dash cracks/ fill holes where accessories were screwed etc... Has anybody inquired with them to see if this type of plastic dash can be "plastic welded" successfully??

        Re: Cracked dashboard

i dont think its plastic..its some kind of vinyl, spongy material. Plastic welds only work on hard plastics, any hot blast to the dash might create holes or dents in it..not too sure about this..

anyone found a solution yet? where does your's start? around the speedo?

          Re: Cracked dashboard

I'm sure I've seen foam type fillers in hardware stores and the like. Maybe the Idea would be to fill the cracks with such a filler and then find some type of durable covering to paint over the top. Colour matching it all will be the problem so it doesn't look crappy.

            Re: Cracked dashboard

I don't think that will work because the cracks are very fine and it is only in the superficial covering. It is like a split in the vinyl finish. It is some type of fabric or rubber.

There is nothing there to hold any foam in. Plus you wouldnt be able to sand it or manipulate it in any way as you would just make it worse. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

Neuro: Mine starts near the right air vent and then runs along the front lip above the instrument cluster. A very fine split in the fabric that looks exactly like the pictures that you posted.

With the onset of high temperatures I now thinking about my poor dash :? .
We all know heat is a issue with probably dust and I was just wondering if there is anything else....To the ones that have develope a cracked on their dashboard , what cleaning product if any do you use on it? It will be interest to see if there is another common link.

I've heard that Amoural can cause dashboards to crack due to chemicals they use.

Has anyone used it to cause the crack?

                    Re: Cracked dashboard

went to an auto shop today, a friend from the workshop said this is way too common.
out of 10 prados he's fixed, 8 have these cracks..some worse along the whole dash.
not only that, it appears on some lexus models too, using the same vinyl material.

                    this is bad..what happened toyota??

                      Re: Cracked dashboard

I have a large hairline crack travelling the length of my dash board. Upon advice from Motorama 4X4 (Brisbane) I submitted an "Out of Warranty" claim to Toyota, only to be told they couldn't help me because my car was "out of warranty". Go Figure!. Has anybody had any luck getting Toyota to repair their dash? If so, what avenue did you pursue.

                        Re: Cracked dashboard

Just got my response from Toyota ....Rejected as I have ran out of Warranty, so I rang the 1800 Customer service dept only to be told the Warranty dept will not accept external calls , their decision would have considered all the facts and is final .....I feel this is a manufacturing fault as I have spoken to a few people that have the same issue.....I have been told that there was an issue with the Camray dash a few years ago and in that instance Toyota were accepting out of warranty claims not sure of the finer details. The service dept at my dealership whilst tight lipped did say they have seen some prados's with a crack in the same place as mine(around the instrument panel).........
Ps I now have another crack working its way from the clock panel toward the bonnet.

Geez, this problem seems to be more common than I thought when I first saw someone post on it. And that sucks about Toyota not coming to the party. Although I haven't noticed any cracks on my own dashboard, I just thought I'd share my empathy with those that have.

                            Re: Cracked dashboard

FYI - due to the current economic climate Toyota is rejecting most if not all "Out of Warranty" claims. Looks like your only choice is legal avenues i.e Fair Trading etc.....

I mentioned in another post about "implied warranties" if there are sufficient number of people having this problem. Then "Out of Warranty" is no excuse. Suggest the people having this problem write a collective email to Toyota as a start. Then Toyota can assess the % of this fault and vehicles manufactured within a specific time period.
                            Cheers,

You can put me down as well guys.

Mine is an 03 GXL and the crack extends from the a/c opening near the drivers side door, right across the top of the instrument binnacle to the right hand centre a/c opening.

The vehicle has either been garaged since new or had a dash mat fitted. Needless to say I was pretty peeved when I discovered it.
