Damn, wish I saw this a week ago!!!

I have thrown it in on the weekend and this guide is FANTASTIC. Saves me uploading all my pics.

    Used the same spot....

Thanks again for the perfect write up.....

I wasn't going to go down this road and just simply keep using my elcheapo portable pump. After seeing this write up, I will have to do the same. You have inspired me.....
However, I do miss the kiddies trike avatar, you look so different now
Well done on the install and writeup

Ah yes, it was with some hesitation and sadness that I left my trike avatar behind. Since delivery, I can play with the big-boys now

One last time for the trike...

          LiveFreeAndRoam,

I would suggest that at the point where you have spliced into the Blue/Yellow accessory power wire that you install an in-line fuse in the wire leading off to the compressor circuit. The wire you have connected is a smaller gauge than the existing wire. It is good practice to always install an appropriately size protection device when ever wire gauge is changed.
The fuse up stream protecting the Blue/Yellow is 50Amp. It would appear from the picture that the wire for the compressor circuit is probably not rated for 50Amp, so it is effectively unprotected and you run the risk of it melting should a fault occur in this circuit.

Pretty sure the loom that comes with the compressor already has a fuse on the control cct doesn't it?

Great information Leachy! It's always a treat learning from the experts.

The ARB wiring loom comes with an inbuilt 40A fuse between the battery and the relay circuit (see figure below). So from your expert eye, you correctly noted that the wiring is not 50Amp... cool.

Given there is a 40A fuse between the battery and relay, is it still neccessary to have a fuse between the switch and the ignition?

While we are discussing electricals... I understand the safety in disconnecting the battery, though is it really necessary to do this when hooking up to the ignition in this way, since there is no power to the ignition when the key is in the OFF position?

                LFaR,

The compressor wiring involves two separate circuits:

                1. The Power circuit: from the battery positive to the 40Amp fuse through the relay contacts, through the compressor motor and back to negative. This circuit is protected by the 40Amp fuse and I assume the wire is sized accordingly so no problems. This is also the most likely circuit of the two to experience a fault, hence the reason why ARB have provided a fuse in the kit for this circuit.

                2. The control circuit: from the accessories supply, through the pressure switch to the relay coil then back to negative. The only load on this circuit is the relay coil (which draws a very small current) hence the wire is a lighter gauge, which is probably good for about 5amps. The issue is that this lighter gauge wire is connected directly onto the accessories power supply, which is protected by a 50Amp fuse. So if there is a fault in the control circuit, the control circuit wire may melt before the 50Amp fuse blows.

The easiest solution is to place an in-line fuse (say 3Amps) in the control circuit right at the point where you splice into the accessories wire. This will protect the control circuit should there be a fault and also provide discrimination ie. If there is a fault in the compressor control circuit the smaller control circuit fuse will blow first isolating the just the compressor control circuit and leaving the rest of the accessories circuits operational. If you are to rely on the upstream 50Amp accessories fuse and there was a fault on the compressor control circuit that caused the 50Amp fuse to blow then you would loose all of the accessories circuits and would need to rectify the problem in the compressor control circuit before you could get any of the accessory circuit going again - Not a good thing if your out in the bush at the time.

Note that I have assumed the control wire is rated for about 5amps hence the 3amp fuse size. You need to verify the size on the control circuit wiring and size the fuse accordingly.

As far as isolating the battery before doing any electrical work on the car, the official line is yes always disconnect the battery. But as you suggest, there are situations where the risk is so low that most people who know exactly what they are doing will not bother to disconnect the battery. The key here is sufficient knowledge to assess the risks. If you are in any doubt whatsoever disconnect battery.

                Hope that makes sense.

                  Leachy,

Nice write-up mate. That makes perfect sense! I went scratching through the documentation again to find more info on the guage of the wire and this is what I found (see p.13 of ARB docs):
                  Code:
NOTE: The desired outlet should supply positive 12V DC, be fused at a minimum of 8amps, and be live only when the vehicle ignition key is in either the "ACC" position or in the "ON" position.
The ease of access to those wires got me excited and I skipped right over that note. I will get down to Supercheap to stock up on an 8 - 10 AMP fuse and add it to my circuit.

Leachy, you may have just saved me a lot-a-heartache.

I'll update the basenote with a pic and more info on this topic.

                  All the best,
                  LFaR.

                    LFaR,
How long is the loom supplied by ARB for the switch? I am thinking of installing one of these and want to bolt it to the side of the drawers in the back.

                    Cheers,
                    Kevin

                      Kevin,

I'm not sure why you would want to mount a compressor inside the vehicle. Compressors are noisey, generate a lot of heat and are quite happy living under the bonnet.

Great stuff LFaR! i've been keen to do this as having it sit in a bag in the back is good but it's the first thing to go out when i need more room (and will probably need it on the day i don't have it)

only comment from me is that your engine bay is too clean. go find some mud.

The loom is too short but easily extended Kevin but honestly, you might want to hear one run before you do it. Mine fills the side steps and I forgot to turn it off the other week. After about 4 days it needed to cycle at 10 at night and we were in bed. The friggen noise from the compressor through a double brick wall about 20 metres away was unbeleivable. I understand if you want to put a tank right next to the compressor or something but honestly, I personally couldn't stand it!

I guess if you just intend to use it when you need tyre inflation the back of the car might be OK. After all you will be pulled up and the back door will be open and all the passengers will get the hot or cold air annoying them.

BUT if you wish to add airlockers down the track, it would be the loudest thing in your climate controlled environment that you have ever heard. The passengers would rather walk.

It would drive you and the kids crazy stopping on the side of the road to pump the tyres up kev, it's loud enough from outside the car. You can always run an airline down the back.

Where it would be good in the car though, is to stop pumping water into the tyres if you've got your AC on. I've noticed some moisture coming out of the hose when connecting and disconnecting off the tyre valve. Up here in the tropics, compressing air is gauranteed to get you plenty of moisture in the lines on a humid day. I rekon that would be the only advantage, using dry air from in the car.

Thank for the input guys. The idea for putting in the back came from talking to one blokes from ARB.

I have one of the older portable compressors but it takes up too much space in the drawers. I will have another look under the bonnet and see what is needed, as from memory (I'm up in the mountains at the moment), the pre-D4D doesn't have the nice area that these installations have used.

                                Cheers,
