  • diesel rattle in D4D Prado

Has anyone noticed a loud rattle coming from the engine on start up in the mornings. The colder the morning the louder the rattle. More noticeable up to 40kmh. Toyota are apparently aware of the problem but still no fix. Apparently someting to do with the emission controller. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi galah,
What type of diesel engine are you referring too?

It is quite normal for many direct injection diesel engines to rattle when cold (D4D), also many pre-chamber/indirect injection diesel engines also rattle.

If you are referring to the D4D Engine the cold rattle you are hearing when you first drive off is normal and is a result of the engine injection control configuration.

You will always hear a slight rattle with the D4D in the lower power ranges when changing gears under moderate throttle.

    Hope this Helps a little

      Thanks clifton,
Its an 07 D4D. Definetely not a normal engine rattle though. Very noticeable and very noisy under throttle to 40kmh. Its been back to the dealer twice and they have admitted there has been a number of complaints about this. Toyota techs are aware of the issue and are apparently looking at a modification to rectify this or at least thats what im told.
      Thanks for the reply,
      Cheers,

Yes mine started to do this after it reached 10,000km. The rattle is like a baffle has broken loose in a muffler only much louder. Very very loud until the engine warms up then it disappears completely.

I was also told that this was normal but why did it not do it for the first 10000kms? It makes me back off on the throttle cause I think something is going to break if I try to accelerate.

          Mav,
Identical to mine - the noise dissapears after a few minutes of running. Just keep putting pressure on the dealer because it is not normal!
          Cheers

I noticed this when I started up this morning (Hilux '07 4x4 workute) my door was still ajar and I was shocked at how noisy it was. It does quiten down once warm (50k on the clock) No point in me complaining as dealers dont care about fleet vehicles. :x

              Hi Guys,

Mine makes the same noise, sounds like it is going to explode when I take off in the mornings up the hill, only lasts for about 5 minutes until the engine warms up, I have been told its due to the fuel system injecting a lot more fuel into the combustion chamber to get the engine up to operating tempreture quickly :?: :?:

                "Diesel Knock"

                Hi Guys,
Looking for a bit of help here, we purchased 2007 Diesel Prado in October. So far it has spent 10 days under warranty to fix the "engine knock" as you all have decribed. I have taken this problem to Customer Relations at Toyota, they have advised that this noise is a"characteristic" of the D4-D common rail diesel, although ours did not have this "Characteristic" until it reached the 10,000 km mark. They have written in writing that that the durability of the engine is not affected in any way. Apparently Toyota have specialists looking at the noise but will not give me any assurance that once they have found a solution they will recall the vehicles and fix them. I have spoken to 2 Toyota service centres & both are like me, at my wits end as Toyota will no longer see my car under warranty for this problem. At one stage they found a fault in #4 injector, this was replaced the noise stopped for a short time but is now back. The noise in our Prado is continually getting worse and the noise is now continuing even after travelling 200km. At another stage they blamed the fuel we were putting into the car, luckily our car is on a building site and only filled up out of a diesel storage tank. And again they said it was a computer generated timing problem.According to Toyota this noise first came about 12 months ago in both Prado's & Hilux's. Our Prado has been observed by 2 private mechanics who both agree along with the service centres that this noise cannot be doing good to the engine.I am trying to get Toyota to acknowledge there is a problem & guarantee us that when they have a solution they will fix our Prado's. Unfortunately they will not listen to me alone, anyone else willing to confront Toyota with us?

                Thanks Mick & Cheryl

Love this forum! ..and I thought I was Robinson Crusoe! Same thing for me... 10,000km and the morning startup and first few blocks driving starts the dogs barking! Perhaps its normal.... seems so from the posts here... Went camping at Stanthorpe last weekend and had the time to start engine and warm it up idling... bingo.. no noise.

So dont tell me I am going to have to warm the sucker each morning to stop the rattle? sheesh!

this new common rail emission technology has the injectors firing every stroke apparently, sounds like something a miss. Does it sound like the fuel timing is advanced too much. Ive worked on cummins engines that used to rattle until the lube oil was up to temp, it was called step timing i think. Its been years since i was in the trade.

                          Hi Steve /Sandra,

No they do not inject on every stroke otherwise we would get severe fuel dilution and high bearing surface wear, but I know where you are coming from.

The 1KD-FTV engines are HCCI Engines which stand for Homogeneous Combustion Compression Ignition Engines what a lovely acronym Aye.

The Toyota IKD-FTV engine uses UNIBUS (Uniform bulky combustion) which comprises a combination of early and late injection timing.

The operation is up to half load and speed. The concept is described by
Toyota Engineers and many papers have been written on the subject.

The early injected fuel undergoes a low temperature
reaction while the late injection serves as an ignition trigger and sets off
the high temperature reaction. The first injection or pilot injection quantity is small.

                          Hope this helps a little

                            I wonder if the unacceptable noise in some D4D engines has something to do with the oil used and/or age of the oil. Those of you with this problem could you please advise the following;

                            (1) How many kilometres after the oil was changed did the noise first appear?

                            (2) What is the viscosity of the engine oil?

                            (3) Is the oil fully mineral, partly synthetic or fully synthetic?

                            (3) Can you please advise the brand and type of oil?

                            Thanks
                            Glenn

I was under the impression they also injected on the exhaust cycle to improve the stoichiometric condition, also to reduce NOx and PM.
I have been out of the trade a long long time. So im trying to learn again.

                              Cheers
