  • ABS too sensitive and comes on before loss of traction

I reckon my ABS is too sensitive and comes on too early and before actual loss of traction. I am suspcious that it is only on one wheel- pehaps front driver but it is a pain because it increases my braking distance.

I also am sick of ABS especially on sand. I know everyone will say yeah yeah on sand the wheels skid easy etc but in non ABS car you iht the picks the front end just buries and you stop quick. Prado just farts out of the ABS and glides gently to a stop - straight into whatever you were trying to avoid. Steering under heavy braking might be a good idea on the highway but its not really an option on flat tyres on sand.

I wish I could turn it off, can I?
If not has anyone else got oversensitive ABS?

Pull the ABS fuse and see what happens :?:
If you get the result you want then wire in a switch to cut the ABS when off road.

PS... your Prado will be unroadworthy (remember a lot of dirt roads/tracks and some beaches are still classed as gazetted roads)

      Mick,
Cheers for the advice. Pulling out the fuse if it works is a very easy fix. I imagine the ABS test red light will come on the whole time but that is to be expected.

It would be nice to know if anyone else has done this? I can't imagine it could cause a problem since the system should be designed to not be damaged by a blown/ramoved fuse, although hopefully it actually stops working.

Cheers and I'll let you know how I go.

That would be a good reminder to put things back to normal once on the blacktop.

A lot of people do it, no matter what make or model... you stop quicker on dirt if the tyres dig in.

Tyres are on they fit good, look good are nice and quiet at you would expect new, and they are about to leave Brissie for Melbourne to tow a van back tomorrow. They are then going to tow my boat to Fraser Island for a 2 week fishing trip. Can't wait.

Re: ABS too sensitive and comes on before loss of traction

I didn't actually get around to pulling out the fuse although I have just spent 2 weeks towing my boat around Fraser island again and having the abs cut in every morning heading down the track from the house. I guess I am just putting up with it but it would be nice if it dn't happen and probably would be safer for running around on the sand with all that weight on if it didn't keep cutting in. I'll try and keep it in mind for the future.
