WBY, putting rubber grease on the back of the pad where the piston touches it is always a good idea to stop squeak / squeal. Some of the more expensive pads have a rubber backing and there is no need.

When it comes to brakes cleanliness is next to godliness...so clean and reclean. Leave to protective residue on the rotors and you will contaminate the pads and they will never work as well.

Yep - clean the rotors thoroughly. Brake clean or similar will remove the anti corrosion coating that they are covered in for shipping.

I found the fronts really easy to do.

The complication with the rears was changing out the handbrake shoes as well. I don't think I've seen anything as fiddly to do ... and you need at least 3 hands

Great write up mate. Im in the middle of changing mine at the moment. Have done the rears and they probably had about a 1/4 left, I have just taken the front pads out and they are still at about 80-90%. Might have to keep them as spares I think.

Re: DIY - Brake Pad change (includes pics)

At about 50,000 km the front brakes started vibrating slightly. Nothing to be concerned about just a little annoying. After two weeks sand driving it because more obvious, probably because of all the light braking. So I decided to replace the rotors and pads rather than get the factory rotors skimmed. I wanted to fit DBA slotted rotors but none were available so they offered the cross drilled discs for the same money. I would have preferred the slotted rotors but I couldn't get confirmation of when they would be available so I went ahead with the gold discs and Bendix pads. $160 each for the rotors and $60 for the pads.

No real difference to the procedure mentioned here except I used some 6mm wire to support the callipers while I was changing the rotors (just had a short length sitting there you can use anything that will support the weight) and I pushed the pistons back into the callipers using a screw driver betwen the old pads and rotor. I didn't take any fluid out first because the reservoir was just full. I left the old pads in the callipers until I refitted them then changed the pads. Be careful when you drop the callipers off if you have ABS, the cable is attached to the brake hose so make sure you don't damage it. You will need a 17mm socket and decent bar to loosen the calliper bolts and a 12mm ring spanner to remove the bolt that holds the brake line in place on the strut. When I finished I removed the excess fluid with a new syringe that I picked up at the local chemist, clean and easy.

Here you can see the new rotor in position with the calliper behind.

          Pads replaced and rotor fitted.

All done. By the way the old pads have just over 6mm left on them so pretty good wear for 56,000km. If anyone wants the pads or the rotors bearing in mind the rotors need skimming send me a pm. Otherwise I will dump the old bits in a couple of weeks.

Re: DIY - Brake Pad change (includes pics)

Today I ordered the bendix pads (DB1200-4WD Rear, DB1482-4WD Front) as I'm under 3mm on both the front and rear pads.

A week or two ago I noticed that I was getting a slight vibration through the steering when under light braking doing about 100kph or so, so I guess I'll get the rotors skimmed (Ill check them with a dial gauge first). Other then that it could a wheel balance issue from my new chunky monkeys I put on there about 5000km ago (BFGs)

Question 1: Is it best to have the rotors skimmed ON the vehicle as apposed to me taking off each rotor to have them skimmed by the shop?
Question 2: Is it worth flushing the brake fluid while at replacing the pads? DOT 3 or DOT 4? What brand is best here?

Re: DIY - Brake Pad change (includes pics)

G'day. I don't think it matters if they are machined on or off the vehicle. With all the cars I've had I have always removed the discs and taken them to my trusty local brake and clutch shop for machining.

Toyota recommends DOT 3 brake fluid. I mentioned in my original write up that I used DOT 4 (because that's all I had) but have since been told it's not a too good idea to mix them so stick with DOT 3. I use the PBR brand as that's what my trusty local brake and clutch shop sells but any name brand will do.

                Cheers.

Thanks mkh, ill take them off if they need machining. If anyone else is interested, the maximum runout for the front rotors is 0.05mm, and the rear is 0.20mm

Bit of a follow up on my pad/rotor change. I still felt a small brake vibration. Literally in the seat so obviously from the rear discs. Nothing much but tedious. I had the wheels rotated as part of the usual deal with new tyres so I had the rear discs machined at the same time and fitted Bendix pads to the rear too. All good now.

                        Great write up!

When I was a mechanic I would put a dish under the brakes and then pour a bucket of hot soapy water over the brake components. This would wash off the dust and any brake fluid residue.

                        cheers

Got mine from edwardstown, Rang them up, Said what I needed and its trade price, thats the price I paid. Picked them up today..

I used a friends business name (so its trade price), but paid cash over counter.

They actually ordered mine in from Kilburn on Friday to be store transferred.

Try ringing Edwardstown: 08 8368 4800. Nikolas took my order. Not open after 12 on SAT.

If you have trouble let me know and I can prob get another set for you from the local on monday.
