I have to look at a way to replace the rail, move it forward, or add a separate 3rd bar.
Any thoughts on this one guys ?
So i should probably start a separate thread but i'm b#ggered if i know what to call it
I saw a land cruiser on the way home yesterday that had the 3 Rhino HD bars. On the ends of the front bars he had the L bracketswith a fram attached on some sort of pivot point. It was laid back over the rest of the bars but looked like it could fold forward over the bonnet. Not sure how strong it would be or what he used it for. Anyway I hope you understand what I mean.

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

Thanks to this thread, I rang my normal Toyota dealer to price up the 3 bar HD set. Normally $313, scored a set for $282. Should arrive this Wed.

I made a mistake by buying a Thule aero bar to fit on my roof rails which cost me $270. I wanted to change to the 3 bar setup as I would like to get an 1800mm long roof platform. Plus I found out that Rhino has a whole lot more accessories for their bars than Thule. Also, I can make up more accesories that can slide into the HD bar if I needed to.

The helpful sales guy also suggested that I look at selling the existing roof rails as they get many enquiries from customers without roof rails. He told me what the whole set would have cost (price below is per side ex GST):
        - Rails $765
        - Front cap $120
        - Center cap $30
        - Rear cap $170
        - Bolts $12 (each bolt)
Grand total $2500 (inc. GST)

For interests sake, the other 3 bar setup that Toyota sell as the aero bar looks like this
        http://www.rhinorack.com.au/BarType_Spo ... 038_3.aspx

I'm now going to see if I can get a custom mesh platform made, similar to the Rhino version but 1800mm long

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

I am still somewhat confused over this whole thing and if it is beneficial price wise and compatible to get the heavy duty rails from Toyota. I have the factory rails on a 2008 GXL and want 3 heavy duty crossbars. Do I buy from Toyota or Rhino?

Do I buy the Toyota bars just for the bars and then get a Rhino fitting kit?

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

As stated previously, I have heavy duty Rhino bars on my Grande. I went for Rhino as Toyota didn't list roof racks as being available for a Grande on their brochure or website. I have had Rhino racks for over 10 years on my old Troop Carrier and have been extremely happy with them. The part numbers for Rhino are:

              Leg Set: CXB
              Bars: RB1250S

They come as a two bar set and are listed on Rhinos website at $298.00

When I get time I'll post a picture of them installed.

The Toyota HD 3 bar set is the square type (as used on commercial vehicles). I'm picking mine up today so will confirm.

They come with the fitting kit and will bolt onto the mounting points from the existing factory roof rails.

it may have just been that they didn't have them to fit the rails.

From your fist post, I got the impression that you wanted the 3 bar HD set to replace the roof rails as you wanted the front bar as close to the front as possible to support your kayaks.

I would go the way of the 3 bar setup as it allows more flexibility and is more practical when carrying long items or if you have a long roof platform/tray. It won't look as good as the factory rails but the 3 bar price from Toyota is the same price as a 2 bar Rhino/Rola/Thule that clips onto the factory roof rails.

i suspect that is what i'll have to do but i would have liked to keep the rails if possible.
Once i pick it up, i'll lay some bars on the rails and see where i need to go from there.

Is it easy enough to remove the rails and fit the new bars yourself ?
If the rails were 200 mm further forward they would work fine

Here is a how to on removing those rails
                          viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3841&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hi lit=grande+rails

I estimate that the front mounting point of the roof rails is roughly 200mm forward of the furthest point you can mount the crossbars on the existing roof rails.

The square ones I think are better suited for a load, rack and attaching accessories.

Appreciate all the info guys. Some good feedback but still bit uncertain which way I'll go.

Re: Rhino-Rack HD Bars V's Genuine Toyota HD Bars

Just picked mine up and it all looks good. Will now attempt to remove the roof rails when i have time.

I weighed the roof racks inside its cardboard box and it is 7.6kg.

The bar is square. For some reason, I thought that the bars would have slight curves in the front and rear faces but I was actually thinking about the Rola Heavy Duty bars. I think the Rola ones look a lot more stylish than these Toyota and Rhino versions.

In the box comes the mounting pads, feet and bars plus all the screws, washers and O-rings. The mounting pads stay on the roof when the racks are removed.

I'm a bit disappointed that the mounting pads don't have a cap to stop dust build up when the racks are removed. So I'll probably just use Gaffa tape to seal it off. I note that on the Rhino rack website, it says "Comes with Precision Moulded Insert cover pads for when cross bars are removed". (source:http://www.rhinorack.com.au/Vehicle_...rado_4239.aspx) Maybe these insert cover pads are what costs $200. So I rang Roof Rack World and Rhino have these as part no M126 and sell for around $4 to $5 each. The thing that the sales guy at Roof Rack World told me is that Rhino will sell any part as a spare part. So if you lose or break anything, there is a replacement part available. At least they don't sell it at Toyota's extortionist prices.

Also a bit disappointing is that the feet are screwed onto the mounting pads with just a single screw. I would have thought that there would be at least 2 screws per feet but I guess the engineers have done extensive field testing and put these bars on the shaker, etc.

                                kezaX4,
How long are your kayaks and how far apart would the supporting cross members have to be at?
When I was investigating how to pull off the roof rails, I discovered that the center part of the rail is a C-section. So you could make up your own angle (structural aluminium angle) and bolt it into a nut bar that you slide into the C-section and held captive there.

                                LostDingo2,
I hope that the info has answered some of your queries. As far as I am concerned, I just saved $200 buying from Toyota instead of from Rhino for exactly the same thing. The only thing is that Toyota only sells black bars whereas Rhino has silver and black.
